BSOD while installing PowerDVD

  • Hello

On my G7, each time I try to install PowerDVD 20, I get a BSOD with "ACPI BIOS ERROR". I can never reach the end of the installation. Any ideas?

From the https://windowsreport.com/acpi_bios_error-windows-10/ list of "solutions":

  1. my drivers are quite up to date, according to SupportAsist as well as Windows
  2. removing my SSD is not an option since Windows is installed on my SSD
  3. I could not find any way to change ACPI settings in the BIOS, so this is out
  4. see 3
  5. don't even think of it
  6. maybe...
  7. I don't have a Windows installation problem, so hopefully 7 is not to be tried
  8. Those are removed. Actually, I removed all Alienware software from my G7 before using them, so that AFAIK, my machine is not overclocked
  9. I did not change anything in the BIOS apart some settings for the battery. Hmm. Battery ... ACPI Could this be the problem? I will now try to reset my BIOS and I'll see

This did it: I reset to factory default and I could patch without any problem.

Problem solved!

Ah, sorry. Although never was the word "Inspiron" mentioned during my order. Some bot already asked me for my service tag. Should I start a new thread in Inspiron or is there some way to move this thread in Inspiron?

Hi @davitofr  a moderator will move your thread for you, there is nothing for you to do, other than to keep contributing to this thread. This is Dell advertising fault by saying New Dell.

Update your bios to the latest version and then update the rest of your drivers.

also do a clean boot and try installing again.

In addition to Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006 response, did you have a previous version of powerdvd installed?

@Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006

Hello and thanks for your answer.

OK, full story: I first tried to install logged to Windows with my local account. BSOD.

I thought BSOD is often a driver issue, so I switched to my administrator account and ran Dell Update. I am not quite sure but I believe Dell Update told me my system was up to date. I went to www.dell.com/support/home/(...) and asked what downloads were available for my Dell G7. I found 8 files and installed them. Some of them were actually already installed: bios (I saw the version which was about to be installed was the same which was already there), and some other drivers (I don't remember which, but I noticed that the installation only offered to repair instead of installing.) I can give you the list if you think it would be useful.

Then I tried to install again, still logged as administrator. BSOD again.

I did not know about clean boots. Discovering new things is (almost) worth the issues I am having Clean boot will be my next step now.

@bacillus1

Hello and thanks for your answer,

The answer is yes. I first bought a license for PowerDVD 19 and installed it, but I never managed to use the software: I got the menus and even my files, but I could never see video content: no DVDs, no video files. I thought maybe the license was not quite legit, so I decided to buy PowerDVD 20 from the CyberLink web shop. While installing PowerDVD 20, the setup asked me to uninstall PowerDVD 19, which I obviously accepted, and further asked me if I wanted to remove previous user settings which I accepted too.

Further information:: BlueScreenView tells me the 3 BSOD happened in ntoskrnl.exe and were caused by ACPI.sys. I guess this only confirms what I already wrote in my first mail.

@Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006 I tried Clean Boot, I am sorry to report it did not solve the issue. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I forgot to mention that during install, around 79%, I each time got an error dialog from FebEditor.exe telling me the application could not start correctly (0xc000007b). I already had the same error dialog when trying to install PowerDVD 19, but PowerDVD 19 never triggered a BSOD. When I click on the dialog's OK button, the installation just goes on until the BSOD. With PowerDVD 19, the installation got on until the end. I carefully checked, this time: the installation programs BSODs at 86%. So this is quite close to the end. Maybe PowerDVD is working, but I wouldn't know how to check what is missing.

Hi @davitofr  thanks for the additional information.

Download the free Revo Uninstaller and use with Advanced scanning mode setting. Run Revo Uninstaller to see if PowerDVD 19, 20, etc is listed. If yes, individually uninstall all your PowerDVD applications, press Scan and when prompted select and delete all files, you might get a second prompt to select and delete more files, then restart. You have now removed everything associated with the PowerDVD applications. Hopefully your Operating System will now function correctly (i.e. no BSOD).

To fix error code, go to YouTube video How to Fix Error Code 0xc000007b in Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista. Video introduction says: Odds are your issue is with Microsoft .Net Framework. Here's how to diagnose what version of .Net Framework is installed, how to update it, fix it or remove it. Odds are that's your problem, but we also provided a few other possibilities because no two computers problems are the same. Click on [show more] to see all the helpful links.

Hopefully, you are now ready to install PowerDVD 20. Please let us know if this works for you.

Safe mode maybe?

i know theyre has to be something up with the software or windows as ACPI controls the power states in your laptop.

I installed Revo uninstaller but could not find theAdvanced scanning mode, maybe it is only in the only in the Pro version? I tried other uninstallers (iobit, geek, Wise) to see if they saw anything, but none could find any trace of PowerDVD. CCleaner found e few registry leftover entries which I removed. Then I decided to do it manually. 1 - Folders: - Program Files : no mention of CyberLink or of PowerDVD - Program Files (x86) : no mention of CyberLink or of PowerDVD - ProgramData : found a CyberLink folder which I deleted - users : found a CyberLink folder in several %user%\AppData\Local which I deleted too. 2 - Registry : I removed anything referencing CyberLink 3 - I emptied the temp folders 4 - I rebooted And I installed PowerDVD 20 and it works ! So all is finished? No. When I tried to apply a patch, I got a BSOD again.

@Alienware Yes, Safe Mode is probably the simplest next thing to try. Then, I'll have to explore this https://windowsreport.com/acpi_bios_error-windows-10/ , which was suggested in the CyberLink forum. I'll report back.
