Dell D3100 Docking station slows a bit

Question

I have a 'Dell Docking station D3100 USB 3.0' to my laptop (Dell inspiron 15), and so far so good but sometimes the graphic is jerky. Its like the graphics is fine on my laptop display, but on the monitor it 'delays' a little. Windows 10, everything is up to date. @duke3d  Ok, well that system doesn't have any 'traditional' docking station connector, so docks based on 'indirect display' technology like the Dell Dxxxx models are your only option with that system.  I'm not sure where the comment about 4K vs. 1080p came from, but the function and drawbacks of DisplayLink apply regardless of resolution, though they might be more likely to occur when running higher resolution displays.  In any case, the use of DisplayLink is likely the reason you're having the issues you originally described.  As a test, you could try connecting an external display directly to your system's HDMI output.  If you do NOT observe the same behavior in that setup, then DisplayLink is your culprit.

@duke3d  Your system is designed for 65W, so a 130W power adapter won’t help. The system will only draw 65W from it. The issue you’re seeing is likely caused by the fact that the D3100 relies on 'indirect technology' called DisplayLink — not to be confused with DisplayPort. Sluggish graphics is one of the side effects that you can see sometimes. I wrote about the drawbacks of DisplayLink in the post marked as the answer in this thread if you want more information. In terms of fixes, I know you said you updated everything, but make sure you’re running the latest DisplayLink drivers obtained directly from DisplayLink.com, not Dell. If that doesn’t help, then a 'native GPU' dock as I described in the post I linked would avoid the drawbacks of DisplayLink, but I don’t know if that’s an option for you since I don’t know what system you have. You just said you have an 'Inspiron 15', but that just means an Inspiron with a 15' display. There have been many of those over the years, so that doesn’t help very much. Your exact model would be something like Inspiron 3577, for example.
