Dell G5 5500 Lightbar issues

Hi all.

I have a brand new Dell G5 5500. It has a light bar on the base of the body which you can set to different colours. It's totally a visual thing but I kinda like it. Issue is from day one it hasn't worked correctly. Sometimes it will come on with the keyboard, other times it won't. I've tried the Alienware Command Centre and that tells me it's on. I've tried different themes but only the keyboard ever goes on.

Another small issue is the F10 seems to not always work. If you open Alienware it does but when you close it the f10 for turning the keyboard backlight off/on doesn't always work after it.

I was on via messeger to Dell who asked me to send a video, which I did. When I had no reply I messaged again then was asked to send a video of the problem which I had already done. I called the support who after 1hr 30mins told me that the issue I had was normal and that there was nothing wrong with the machine. I told them this was rubbish at which point an engineer was booked. Engineer wasn't actually booked so I had to chase this up and one was then booked for me. He came out with the part that didn't actually have the part on it he needed. He got it working but for about 2hrs the bar wouldn't go off, even when the laptop was closed. It's back to randomly happening now and the engineer is coming out with the correct part.

My thoughts are that this might not be a ardware issue. Has anyone else had this issue or issues with the light bar? If you have, did you and if so how did you fix it?

I have the same issues;  the bios (latest 1.4.2)  has been updated.   The bios settings are supposed to have color bar and back light illumination options,  but DO NOT.  Fn - C  is supposed to change the color,  but does not.  F10 is supposed to toggle the back light & color bar but randomly does not.  After Alienware start the F10 key DOES toggle the back light on and off, also the color bar,  but does NOT toggle through dim.   Fn - C  DOES NOT change the color...   ever.

This morning during the boot cycle,  like magic,  the back light and color bar toggled through a rainbow of colors with a range of brightness illumination (the leds support a wide variety of colors actually) but once the machine booted up the color bar went to the normal blue-green (cyan) color.  The Alienware software will let me set the light bar and back light to bright,  dim,  or off,   but I cannot toggle through those options with F10.  There does not appear to be a utility to set the keyboard back light and color bar illumination options (intensity nor color);  also,  the latest bios for the G5 15 5500  DOES NOT have back light color bar illumination settings tab(s).

This is like buying a new car that has a defective cigarette lighter,  even though the driver does not smoke.

( Dell's stock is going down )

   Issue Resolved

The G5 15 5500 has quite an involved color scheme and theme mechanism which is pretty cool once it works and the end user understands how to use it.  The bottom line  here is that even though the machine is only three days into warranty,  the Alienware Command Center either got corrupted or was not installed correctly from the get go...   the resolution to this color bar and keyboard back light situation is to completely remove the Alienware Command Center Suite ( which unfortunately involved editing several pertinent registry keys , deleting all relevant folders ,  and uninstalling the Alienware Command Center Suite of tools>   I followed the link following:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=h-Z09OkH99I

Once I reloaded the Alienware Command Center Suite I clicked the "updates available" (green tag) in the command center and logged into MS to get the updates as well  the sound modules, the FX stuff for lighting, and the additional AWCC components.  Then I went into the Alienware Command Center Suite  FX  theme settings and was finally able to set the color bar color theme(s) by zone,  and I was able to set the keyboard back light(s) color scheme by keyboard zones...  very cool...  lots of colors and intensity are available and once set the F10 key can be used to toggle them off if desired;   this is now reliable on my machine and I'm a happy camper.

A very very minor issue still prevails in that I still cannot find a way to keep the color bar and back light(s) from timing out (its about a minute now)  but they do come back on when I touch the keyboard or the track pad.  There should be a way to fix the  lights ON without timer,  but I cannot find it.

Anyway ,  happy hacking people...   signing out.

I also have this problem but at least mine is permanently off.  The problem is a software one with drivers and the Dell Alienware Software.  I have decided to live without it as I really like the speed of my laptop as is.  The Alienware software can cause issues with the fans revving which is really annoying so this for me is the lessor of the two evils.  Its not right and we shouldn't have to live with it like this, but for now it is what it is.

We haven’t been able to resolve this issue, and frankly I’m extremely disappointed in Dell at this point. I had terrible customer service when calling about a separate issue, and I’m seriously contemplating getting a full refund and just sending the computer back and trying a different company all together.

.  Their help on this site is Zero (0) Zed Zilch.

The 'lights' and the 'fans' are controlled by Alienware Command Center AWCC.  The G5 5500 'must' be at the latest bios level, the AWCC must be at the latest software level, and Windows 10 must have all the latest patches.  Then the AWCC needs to be setup.  The 'light bar' is actually several lightbars (or zones) and each may be assigned a different color, including blinking, pulsing, etc.  The keyboard backlights are also several 'zones' and each zone may be set to a different color, including blinking, pulse, etc. Also, there is a background process for AWCC that 'must' be running in order for Alienware Command Center to work properly.  You can check using the task manager,  or preferably the 'process explorer'.

It took me 'weeks' to get my AWCC working correctly,  all fans, all lights, all zones.  What a nightmare;  no help from Dell, other than their site does have the updates you'll need, the latest bios, and the latest Alienware software.  I had to figure it all out on my own.

The 'lights' are not a big deal really... I paid for them, and I expect them to work !  But,  the fans are another kettle of fish entirely!  If they don't come on properly, your notebook will be toast-- literally.  Or, the other way round, if they come on all the time the dad blasted thing sounds like a jet sitting on the tarmack!

Anyway,  best of luck... yes, my next notebook will definitely NOT be a Dell;  period.

So I have finally restored mine in Windows 11.
This was the version I had to use..
Alienware Command Center Application
But you need to remove all other versions and add in the Dell-Power-Manager-Service_YX9MN_WIN64_3.15.0_A00
