Dell Precision 3660 PCIe Training Error

Hello,

An end-user has a Dell Precision 3660 with 3 PCIe slots consisting of one x16 and two x4 slots. They are using a PCIe DAQ card from National Instruments PCIe-6351 to slot into one of either the x4 PCIe slots. However it is returning BIOS warning "PCIe - Training warning on device PCI tag-0400 VendorID-1093 DeviceID-C4C4 SVid-1093 SDid-742F Link Degraded maxwidth = x4. negWidth = x1".

I can confirm that the PCIe-6351 is a x1 PCIe compliant device. From below table, it says that this PCIe DAQ is also compatible with x1, x4, x8 and x16, I presume this is mechanically.

Can I confirm that the warning is because the PCIe slot is x4 electrically but is being slotted in with a x1 device?

Thanks, Sher

PCIe training error usually when the communication between the CPU, mainboard and the PCIe card are unstable or have bit errors, it would cause the system to a halt.

There are a few things can cause this error, ultimately a faulty hardware but not for your situation, yet. My advice is to check if the system's iDRAC/LCC, BIOS, other hardware and the PCIe card firmware is up to date. It would be good to check if the card that you are using is compatible.

Hey Adrian,

Thanks for the reply.

The PCIe card is newly bought so I guess that rules out the PCIe card firmware.

Cards are compatible at least that is from the manual of the card itself as on the snippet that I have provided on the original post. Not exactly sure if this is electrical and /or mechanical compatibility. This is something that I would have to check with the vendor.

I will check on non-card specific information. Thanks!
