Dell Studio XPS 1645 Processor Upgrade
Studio XPS 1645
I am getting sent a Dell XPS 1645 and wanted to know will this support the Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 processor as I was told it has a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo in it and the Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 is way less than the Intel Core 2 Extreme X9300

The system was never shipped with the extreme edition CPUs, which draw appreciably more power than standard CPUs, so it is an experiment you'd have to try. The first hurdle will be seeing if the system will identify the CPU -- it may not, and game over.
Even if the system does identify the CPU, the next hurdle will be heat -- these systems ran hot when new and an Extreme CPU will exacerbate that issue. And then you have the possibility that when new, such a CPU may work - but you're now running it on a system with voltage regulating chips that are in their teenage years.
You can easily buy a used system that will run rings around anything a system this old can do -- probably a better use of funds unless this is an experiment more than anything that makes economic sense.

There isn't anything. The original CPU you asked about is second-generation, which definitely will not work.
The only CPUs that are faster are the XM CPUs -- which will have the same issue of using more power and generating more head, and which were never shipped with this model system.

Can I install a Intel Core i7-2630QM in it as it has a i7-Q840 in it now and would the Intel Core i7-2630QM give better performance?
Thank you

It was never shipped with the QM CPUs, and these ran hot even when new. The QM CPU will only increase the heat levels of the system. The first issue will be whether the system would even boot with that CPU -- the second whether or not it would run in stable fashion. Either way, unless you're in for an experiment it may not be a wise idea to try.

Why ask a question that's already been answered?
