External Hard Disk Sleeping too Quickly

After doing all the software updates and installations for a brand new Inspiron 7790 AIO

I plug in a Lacie 8TB HDD which contains media, photos and other content, and I notice that the drive goes idle far too quickly. I noticed this while playing music where there are excessively long breaks between pieces, or a break in the middle of a piece while the drive wakes and spins up.

Digging around this forum revealed that this is not an isolated matter, but the 'solved' solution I found involving a registry change did not make any difference.

From outside this forum, it would suggested that 'Advanced settings of Power options' should provide some control over drive sleep times, but this setting as been removed by the Dell Win 10 installation.

No HDD options here…No HDD options here…

Are there any known options for changing the Drive sleep settings?

This computer purchase was supposed to provide a performance increase, not decrease . This issue was not present with these drives on the previous computer yesterday.

While Dell-Care on this community were unable to create a solution, I did speak to a Dell support representative via telephone, and after explaining the situation, they acknowledged that Dell's Windows 10 build contained a configuration that was not suitable for my usage.

Subsequently the computer is being returned to Dell for a full refund.

I will recommend you to change the power options:

  • Click on 'Start'.
  • Click on 'Control Panel'.
  • Click on 'Power options'.
  • On the left side of the screen, click 'Choose what closing the lid does'.
  • Click the drop down on 'When I close the lid' and set it to 'Do nothing'.
  • Change it on both 'On battery' and 'Plugged in'.
  • Click on 'Save changes'.
