External monitor connected through HDMI flickers, but external TV works fine

Hello everyone,

I've a issue with my Dell Inspiron 7386 2-in-1 where whenever I connect an external monitor through it either starts flickering to black screen or just refuses to get a signal. While when I connect same laptop to an external TV through same HDMI port, it works without any issue.

I can confirm that there is no problem with monitor as I regularly use it from my other laptop and also through my gaming console.

I don't know if it is an issue with my laptop because it works fine with external TV. Though I fail to understand what is the reason behind this different behaviour.

These are the steps that I've already done:

  1. Connected laptop to external monitor using different HDMI cable : Flickering / No Signal
  2. Connected laptop to TV using the older HDMI and also with new HDMI cable: Works everytime without any issue
  3. Connected different laptop to external monitor to check if monitor is alright: Works everytime without any issue
  4. Checked for latest drivers / BIOS through Dell Support Assistant: All latest drivers / BIOS installed

I saw some posts in other forum where members attributed it to BIOS issue and rolling back to older BIOS, but am not sure if I need to do it for this model of laptop.

Appreciate any assistance in this regard.

No, doesn't work. When I go into Display Settings to change the resolution, I can see that my laptop has detected the external monitor and is listing the display settings but nothing happens when I change the color mode or the refresh rate.

Offlate, it has become worse. After plugging in the monitor, there is nothing that displayed on it. It just goes into power saving mode. I regularly use the monitor through Surface Pro, so I am sure that there is no issues with monitor.

Hello,

Is HDR (High Dynamic Range) enabled ? windowskey +i => system=> display i see you have an intel graphics card try to "play with the settings" via the "intel graphics controlcenter app" .connect the external monitor and see what happens in that intel app.

I don't think downgrading the bios will help you with this issue.
