G15 5511 2nd M.2 Drive Issues

I have got a Dell G15 5511 (Intel i7 1180h, geforce 3060 rtx, 16gb ddr4 memory, etc) that I really enjoy using but doesn’t seem to like my second m.2 drive.

Laptop came with only one drive - 512mb PCIe Gen3 NVMe.  I installed in the empty slot a 1TB Gen4 NVMe - WD SN850.  I realized I was in getting gen 3 speeds with the gen4 drive in that slot so I switched slots.  The gen3 drive is in the second slot and the gen4 drive is in the primary slot.  When the gen4 drive displays it shows it as gen4 speeds per crystal mark, however the drive disappears in Windows from time to time.

I read this language in the G15 5511 Setup and Specifications - “NOTE: If you have ordered only one solid-state drive, it can be upgraded to the solid-state drive of the same form factor but an additional solid-state drive is not supported. If you have ordered two solid-state drives, they can be upgraded to the solid-state drives of the same form factor respectively.”

Does this mean I can only use one slot in my laptop? That would be very frustrating.  Please let me know if you have any ideas.  I’ve tried updating the chipset and firmware for both the bios and the drive.  Drive is detected consistently in the bios without fail.

Thanks.

Hi, I was about to order the Dell G15 5511 i5 11400H and RTX 3050, I have a 2TB 980 Pro, and dell claims that it supports PCIe Gen 4 Speeds, but as I have seen there is no benefit of it as it won't function as desired, I've read that Updating the BIOS to the latest version will solve this issue, but as I have seen it didn't, any update by anyone? is it worth getting it for the PCIe gen 4? for me it is not a big of a deal because I can max out PCIe Gen 3 Speeds in the 2nd M.2 slot

I went away from Dell after some issues in 2007 and have had 3 HP’s and 1 Asus systems which were true to their specifications (no surprises) and are still functional. I decided to go back to Dell with my G5 5511 vs HP Omen because in my research the Omen had dual M.2 SSDs 1 gen-3 and 1 gen-4 while G15 seemed to have dual M.2 SSDs gen-4. I purchased a Crucial P5 Plus 1tb drive and expected to run in my G15 5511 at gen-4 speed which it does not in either slot 1 or slot 2. Very disappointed again with Dell. Found this post on Dell community board G15 5511 2nd M.2 Drive Issues - Dell Community.

I was just told the same thing. About if you got 512gb you could only upgrade to 512 gb. Still waiting for answer why there is 2 m2 ssd slots if you cannot use it.

Both the SSD Slot0(1) and Slot1(2) of the Dell G15 5511 - CPU - Intel Core i7-11800H - GPU - RTX 3060 version give around 3500MB/s in benchmark with a Samsung SSD Pro 980 2TB Gen4 M.2 NVMe drive.

BIOS Version: 1.12.0 - Still the same issue - Not getting the PCIe Gen4 speeds.

But in the "Storage" section of the spec PDF it is mentioned that the laptop supports PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe

Have you ever gotten an answer to this issue?  You can add Crucial P5 Plus to list of Gen-4 running at 3400 both slot 1&2

Anyhow, I'm in a mood for giving up getting Gen4 SSDs to work on G15 5511. I will use my Gen4 SSD for the next PC I would buy from the vendors who offer adequate information for what they are selling.

I am planning to get Dell G15 5511 (i7 11800H + RTX 3060)

I have 2TB 980 Pro Gen 4, I found a recent update for PCIe Gen 4 ssds, can you guys try to install all the updates in Dell website and try if slot 1/2 works 2ith Gen 4 7000MB/s?

Moved dell 512 drive to port 2 labeled SSD-2 (OS). Installed Crucial P5 Plus 1TB Gen-4 in port 1 labeled SSD-1 runs fine but only at Gen-3 speed. I was under impression that G15-5511 had Gen-4 capability since it is _7-11800H. I think the G15-5511 has Gen-4 one port that the Graphics card is using and non for SSD. see attached Dell MB Intel Pcie4.jpg.  Dell Mb-Bios.jpg.Dell Mb-Bios.jpgDell PCIE.jpgDell MB-cpuz.jpg  Dell PCIE.jpg

I didn't buy it yet but probably in 2 weeks, as I said previously I have a 2TB 980 Pro, and sadly I think I will be considering other Gen 4 supported laptops, it is really dumb that they listed it Gen 4 on the main slot

if you guys find a Laptop with these specs please lemme know:

RTX 3060, PCIE Gen 4, Idc about RAM + Storage because I will upgrade them, and below $1100

Open Box / refurbished is fine for me, Amazon eBay anything

I already have multiple service requests in progress with support.

Dell had me send my G15 5511 in for repair due to the PCIE Gen4 NVME issue.

Got it back yesterday. Can confirm that I still have the issue and nothing was resolved. I've contacted tech support and we'll see what they say now. Heck they didn't even bother to reconnect the keyboard illumination that was part of the ticket. The last guy that came out here and replaced the motherboard the last time disconnected it or something hasn't worked since..

Seems that things just keep getting worse and worse. Pretty sure this is the way it's supposed to go...

I've now had this machine for 7 months I believe, and it still doesn't work up to specs and now I don't have any keyboard illumination. I mean I might as well just paid somebody to beat me over the head with a frying pan....
