G15 5511, does not turn on
Hello,
My G15 5511 laptop does not turn on. I sent it to Dell and they replaced my SSD and part of the adapter. However, it worked for one day and got the same problem again.
It's obvious that it's not a matter of hardware damage more than a driver conflict. The problem happens when I install Linux and close the lid while the system is running. When I open the lid I get a black screen with a message saying "can’t change power state from D3cold to D0".
When I searched that, I found in the below link that the system is powering the GPU off before the driver has a chance to load and initialize it properly:
So, it could be a bug in NVIDIA or Linux, but the problem now is that I can't power up the laptop to fix this issue. How can I drain the battery to reset everything and turn it back on?
Any idea is appreciated.
Thanks

Unplug the system, remove the base cover and disconnect the main battery from the system board.
Then reconnect the battery and try powering up again.

Thanks so much for your reply. This is helpful but, it could be silly to say, will I lose the warranty by opening up the base cover?

I feel you, having a battery nondetachable is a curse. However, as ejn63 said, you can remove the base cover and unplug the battery for a while. It doesn't affect your warranty as long as you don't break anything.

These systems use Dell's hybrid power -- i.e., when the system is heavily loaded, it will tap the battery even when it's plugged into AC power.
Is the Linux install from Dell, or is it one you did yourself? And if the latter, did the system ship with Windows originally?

Thanks so much, the laptop is now back to life. I still, however, working on solving the D3cold problem. I'll keep this post updated.

Sorry for my late reply, I didn't see the message.
I installed Linux myself, it was originally shipped with Windows. So, what does the power hybridization do for this error. What does it mean at the first place?
For now, I just avoid suspending the system, I only use normal shutdown.

only to say the screws are unbelievably soft. Yes I did find a correct bit - not sure if they are just cheapest manufacturer or someone can tell you opened it. Fortunately I read the service manual so didnt attempt to fully remove the middle 4 screws.
Shouldnt have to be opening a 21 day old laptop because BIOS upgrade failure endlessly reboots causing battery to flat THEN says - ah your battery is below 50% you cannot upgrade bios.

I have the same problem, Dell sent me a technician to replace the motherboard. This solution worked for a while but then the problem came back. The solution is to unplug the battery and press on the start button for thirty second then replace the battery, the G15 will restart. My guess is that it is a BIOS problem that need to be fix.

Just to take this probability out of the loop, make sure the battery cable is not loose. I used electricity tap to affix the cable to the body of the battery. It's more stable now but the problem may return.

Can someone (Dell?) confirm if this bug/error still exists with BIOS version 1.10.1 from 2022-01-22 when using Ubuntu 20.04 (default or HWE-kernel) + Nvidia drivers?
Since Dell states that the G15 5511 is compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS I hope that @Dell will fix this issue soon and can comment here about the current status.
We were considering this laptop for our employees who need Ubuntu 20.04 (and soon 22.04) + Nvidia drivers. Due to this problem we are now looking into other options.

I add my voice to yours. When I contacted the customer service for this issue, they told me they might help me only if it was Windows (the default OS of this laptop). I believe since they said it's compatible with Ubuntu, they must solve this problem.

Following up to see if the system is fine after BIOS downgrade and then auto upgraded to latest bios version? Let us know.
