G15 5515 SSD Gen 4 support?
I have a Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition that I'm upgrading the storage on, I'm looking at two different 2Tb M.2 2280 SSDs, virtually everything is the same except one is Gen 3 and the other is Gen 4. The Gen 4 is more durable, costs less, and has similar speeds at ~3500 Mb/s.
I'd like to go for the Gen 4, but I'm not sure if my computer supports Gen 4. I was not able to find anything in the user manual or in previous posts, except that exceptionally fast Gen 4's (~7000 Mb/s) may be throttled down to Gen 3 speeds (~4000 Mb/s) by a Gen 3 connector. Seeing as how the Gen 4 I'm considering is within Gen 3 limits, I'm not sure if this will be affected.
Any advice is appreciated!

To answer my own question, I bought an affordable Gen 4 x 4 SSD that falls within the speed threshold of Gen 3's (~3000 Mb/s). Installed, my system is able to fully utilize that speed without detriment and the card appears to be fully compatible.

This system fully supports Gen 3 X4 drives.
Look under Specifications/storage in the manual here:

Thank you!
I understand that the internal drive supports Gen 3 x4 NVMe SSDs, but I'm wondering if a Gen 4 x4 SSD would work as well.
PCIe's are generally backwards compatible, but speed is limited by the number of connectors. Gen 3 PCIe connectors have fewer points of connection than Gen 4's. In the somewhat unique case of a laptop, I'm wondering if using a next-gen SSD would be detrimental.

Same situation as me, I have WD SN770, but read speed is only ~3000. So don't waste your money on anything faster than 3000

Which slot did you install it in - the manual says that the one of the slots is only compatible with Gen 3, leaving me to believe that the other one (the one the boot drive is in) is Gen 4?

The one where there was a Boot Drive, is actually Gen3 slot. I thought that he installed on the secondary slot. The terminology is, in the manual, all slots is under Gen3. You cannot exceed to Gen4 levels.
Gen3 and Gen4 in fact don't differ if you game. Loading a Spiral Abyss Domain, etc., do not hit hard, and you won't feel the major difference in performance terms when you game on.
According to TechSpot Gen3 vs Gen4 comparison, when counting to CSGO and Shadow of Tomb Raider, all drives will go within just two seconds. Both generations cannot reach beyond the line between 2.00s and 2.99s. The result, no visible difference in terms of gaming.

Sorry for the late reply, I installed it in Slot 2. You need to buy mounting hardware for your SSD as well. To my understanding PCIe is backwards compatible so both should support Gen 4, but they cap out at about 3000 mb/s (Gen 3 speeds). From my research, Gen 4 drives are better built with longer lifespans, so it is worth it if you can find an affordable one.
