Hard drive fail no backup SMART

I have an Insprion 15 7547. my hard drive failed and i have no back up. I am trying to install a new hard drive but the usb keeps giving ma an error message about "cannot get SMART status". I tried changing my SATA configuration in bios but I'm not allowed to even with the admin passcode. BIOS is all i have so 90% of the info on here doesn't. I just want a new drive people, it shouldn't be this hard.

It isn't clear exactly what you're doing.  If you've mounted the new drive and attached the old drive by USB, note that SMART doesn't function over USB -- it's readable only internally.  And if the drive isn't being read at all, whether internal or external, carefully weigh the value of the data against the cost of professional data recovery, which is all but certainly needed here.

Anything you do from this point on could easily make the recovery process much more difficult and therefore much more expensive.  Most reputable recovery services (Gillware, Ontrack, Drive Savers, etc.) will evaluate the drive with a firm estimate of the repair cost, without charge.  These services are not inexpensive -- a software-only recovery will start in the $600 range and can escalate rapidly if hardware repair is required, particularly if it's a Seagate drive, which are very difficult to recover.

However, if you must have the data, consulting a data recovery service is your best course of action.
