HEVC Hardware Decoder

Hi All,

I have an Inspiron 17 3780 with a Intel Core i7 8th Gen with Radeon Graphics. I enjoy editing video, mainly shot on GoPro's, and have no problem editing 4K video. I've recently purchased a GoPro Max which has 5K and takes 360° video and now have problems with rendering with the GoPro Player editor.

On contacting the GoPro community, apparently the solution to my problem is a HEVC Hardware Decoder and suggested that I contact either Microsoft or Dell.

Is this an easy task involving a simple download? All searches on the internet come up with HEVC Codec downloads, which already exist on my laptop.

Any help and guidance gratefully received.

Are you able to encode 4K but not 5K video?  If so, you may be bumping up against the limits of the GPU in that system - it's relatively old and decidedly low end for video encoding.

Hi @ejn63 ,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I can render to UHD 4K in GoPro Studio, albeit a bit slow. But in GoPro Player, specifically designed for GoPro 360°. I select the required .360 file then get a pop-up box stating: No Hardware Decoder. Your graphics device does not support HEVC video hardware decoding. You may experience poor playback performance. We recommend using a graphics device with HEVC video support. I click ok and GoPro Player opens. I can edit the footage with desired 360° affects, then export (about 45seconds of video). Select export settings as Cine Form 1080p and send for rendering. Click render, it fails and Player closes and saves a .MOV file. That's when I contacted the GoPro and now Dell communities.

I've just updated to the latest Windows 10 Home, Version 20H2. The laptop has an Intel(R) Core i7-8565U CPU@ 1.80 GHz 1.90GHz. Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.88GB usable) and 64 - bit operating system, x64 - based processor.

I've only had the laptop about 2 years from new and only just started using it in anger for video editing recently after (and still use) using my older Inspiron with GoPro Studio for editing.

Regards

I am trying to get technical support for my issue but cannot because my warranty is overdue.

The renewal price is quoted is: £76.94, but on placing order in basket, the price quoted is: £81.53.Why?

I have tried the all contact links supplied by Dell and find it too difficult to navigate and keep hitting brick walls, and I don't want to waste time on a phone waiting for an assistant.

Help!

Regards

There is likely added tax to the total.  That said, you're better off with GoPro support than Dell, since this is almost certainly an issue with their software - not Dell's system, or with Windows itself.

Hi @ejn63

Sorry to bother the community. I'm just getting a bit frustrated!!!

Not having used this laptop for a while. (see earlier post)  my warranty lapsed. On clicking renew via the renew link, I am given a renewal price which includes tax. Placing in basket and it costs more! All I was try to get was some advice from technical support from Dell and ended up in circles, getting nowhere fast.

Sorry to vent my annoyance via community, you guys have been most helpful. In the meantime I'll have another go trying to solve my problem with GoPro.

Kind regards from a 64 year old, old fart!

Ian
