I2C Hid Device - request for the HID descriptor failed

Hi,

I just got a Dell Inspiron 5000 13 5379 and I noticed that in Device Manager there is a device "I2C Hid device" that is getting a code 10:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed.

The machine originally had Windows 10 Home and had that error and I did a recovery and it still had that same error, and it had the error after updating all the drivers from Dell Support.

I then completely wiped the machine and installed Windows 10 Pro and then installed all the drivers from Dell Support again, and it STILL has exactly the same error.

I have seen several older threads, but so far, have not found the problem.  FYI, in my case, the laptop seems to be functioning ok, e.g., touch pad and touch screen work ok, but this error is bugging me :(...

Is there a way to eliminate this error?  I did a chat with Support and they did not seem to know.  They kind of said that they had never heard of this problem (even though I can see some similar or maybe same problems in this forum).

Thanks,

Jim

Same problem here, same story. Dell was not able to fix the problem. The list of drivers on Dell's support page doesn't include anything that looks touchpad-related, and I've tried updating them all to no avail. I'm not sure what recourse I have at this point.

I should add -- you say it's "working ok", but mine is not scrolling or any of the more advanced gestures, and sometimes fails entirely (i.e. the cursor disappears and the touchpad no longer has any effect at all).

Same problem, I've tried to fix this for months. I've call to dell support but they use the same solution as me. I was fixed by remove the device (I2C HID Device) in device manager. Then re-install the Intel-Serial-IO-Driver_RXDJM_WIN_30.100.1725.1_A05. Sometimes this solution might work, but unfortunately mostly not.

My new laptop has the same problem. They want to replace my LCD screen. Any thoughts?

I also have the same problem...

Every time I do uninstall "I2C Hid Device" from Device Manager and restart the PC. This is the temporary solution only. In some time, again touch pad (or sometimes only gestures) will stop working. Again the same have to be done to get it worked. Hmm...

For me, even this temp solution has stopped working. Very frustrating.

I have the same issue. Warranty expired on July 4, 2018. Tried everything, tried coordinating with windows since I2C is supported by windows, they gave me the following solutions,

1- uninstall any previous windows updates that may have caused the issue

2- restore to a previous windows checkpoint (takes whole day)

3- reinstall the Dell Chipset

4- uninstall I2C and restart

This device cannot start. (Code 10) A request for the HID descriptor failed

Always these solutions sometimes work, but mostly they do not.

Ok I know this thread is SUPER old, but it's 2023 and it still comes up for me.  I FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!!!

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/i2c-hid-driver-touchpad-failure-i-think-i-solved/7b55d3f4-ca90-4eaa-b9a5-bad9006b1ff3?rtAction=1702361152055&page=1

For all of the devices in that drop down that have the power management tab, I unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and restarted.  BOOM!  SOLVED!  For anyone else like me still having this issue, there it is folks!!
