I2C HID DEVICE : This device cannot start. (Code 10) A request for the HID descriptor failed.

I have Inspiron 7359 2 in 1.

My touchpad has not been functioning properly, I can see the pointer and use it a bit but it dances all across the desktop. Only a few seconds after restart or start of the windows it works then behaves strangely - No issues when I connect Bluetooth mouse or on the touchscreen.  I checked the device manager and see a failure in I2C HID Device. I have tried to uninstall and update the driver numerous times but it does not work. When I check for Touchpad in Mic and other pointing devices, it's not there. I also tried the regedit to check the Synaptics but I don't see that specific options listed under my Softwares. Please help !!!

I have this issue too.  Code 10.  Uninstalling the device and restarting used to help.  Doesn't help anymore.  I can't use two-finger scrolling and most other touchpad-specific functions.

I get the same thing but for my touchscreen, I have even factory reset the laptop (updated it all the way to today's current Windows) and done several troubleshooting options and have the same persisting problem. It's very sad because I got this laptop in 2019 and it's been working flawlessly and fast aside from this touch screen error.

My error message

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed.

Ok I know this thread is SUPER old, but it's 2023 and it still comes up for me.  I FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!!!

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/i2c-hid-driver-touchpad-failure-i-think-i-solved/7b55d3f4-ca90-4eaa-b9a5-bad9006b1ff3?rtAction=1702361152055&page=1

For all of the devices in that drop down that have the power management tab, I unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and restarted.  BOOM!  SOLVED!  For anyone else like me still having this issue, there it is folks!!

If only it were so easy....

One can NOT turn off Power Management on device that has code 10 error

But one can do it on the parent (view by connection)

Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - A0E9

which is connected to PCI Express Root Complex

But after reboot Allow to turn off this device... comes back magically ON

so the HID device still has the same Code 10 error

Hi all,

I found the solution suggested by Abhinav Bharadwaj R.

Abhinav Bharadwaj R: "I have found the true origin of my issue and managed to find a solution!

After finding the real issue, I managed to find the correct solution.

But first, make sure the Driver "I2C HID" is fully Updated (in my case it is v10.0.18362.1 provided by Microsoft. Kindly see the Driver Details given below) to see if fully updating fixes the issue."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Driver Information :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: It's highly advised to make a backup of either the Registry Editor folder you plan on modifying or create a restore point for your whole computer. Information on how to do either can be found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/322756/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-registry-in-windows

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After you've ensured you're all backed up, you can continue. Follow the Below Steps below one-by-one carefully.

Step 1: Open Registry Editor with Windows + R and type "regedit"

Step: 2: navigate the folders to reach this point: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

Step 3: Under the Class folder, you'll find a long list of keys. If you're issue is like mine and is related to only the touchpad, find and open 4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 (take your time, make sure you don't modify the wrong folder)

Step 4: If you see the file "Upperfilters", delete it.

Step 5: Right click, select "new", select "New Multi-String Value" and name it "Upperfilters". You're essentially remaking the file you just deleted.

Step 6: Double click on the new "Upperfilters" value you just made.

Step 7: In the "Value Data" box, type "mouclass" and save.

You should now have a replacement file with the following information:

  • Name: Upperfilters Type: REG_MULTI_SZ Data: mouclass

Step 8: Now restart your computer.

If it worked, nothing should be broken and your touchpad issues should be fixed! No more yellow triangle on the I2C HID Device!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: Kindly refer to the below-Mentioned source only if you're seeking to know about the Root cause and further analysis (because steps and procedures mentioned there will be a bit confusing). Or else the above-mentioned solution will suffice.
