Inspiron 15 5000 - 5559 Ultra Wide Monitor

Hi

I have a 5 year old Inspiron 15 5000 Series (Intel(R)) - 5559 laptop. I was thinking of getting a ultra wide monitor as a second monitor.

How can i check if my laptop will support an ultra wide monitor? I cant find what version of HDMI port i have either.

Thanks

@Andyo74  A laptop that's 5 years old at this point definitely wouldn't support HDMI 2.0, but it very likely would support HDMI 1.4.  My XPS 15 9530 from late 2013 supported that.  The typical resolutions used with HDMI 1.4 are 2560x1440 at 60 Hz and 4K 30 Hz.  In terms of the ultra-wide setup you're considering, it would depend on the specific resolution you're looking at, since there are several ultra-wide resolutions on the market.  2560x1080 would likely be fine.  I'm pretty sure 3440x1440 and 3840x1600 would NOT be fine, but I'm not 100% sure.  5120x1440 and 5120x2160 would certainly be off the table.

Just in case anyone was having the same issue I was having, Dell support helped me out and confirmed that my Inspiron 15-5559 was capable of driving the S3422DWG monitor at full resolution.  The solution was to download Intel Graphics Command Center and then use the Custom Resolultion option to specify the resolution I wanted to use the monitor at.   They recommended that I use a 24 Hz refresh rate.

I followed the instructions and have full use of the monitor. I use it for office applications so the lower refresh rate doesn't affect me.  I haven't tried upping the refresh rate to see if it will still function adequately but that will be an experiment for another time.

Thanks Dell Support!

I was attempting to connect the Dell S3422DWG ultrawide monitor to my Inspiron 15-5559 running Windows 10 but the highest resolution I can select is 1920x1080 even though 2560x1440 is possible. Windows is not giving me an option to select anything higher than 1920x1080.   Am I missing something in the setup that would allow me to select 2560x1440?  Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Thanks for responding to my question!  I appreciate you taking the time to help out.  I currently have the S3422DWG ultrawide monitor at 3440x1440 at 24 Hz.  I need to up the Hz to see if the monitor still performs adequately.

@JeffV321  Good info, thanks for sharing that.  I typically don't address custom resolutions and sub-60 Hz refresh rates (except the specific case of 4K 30 Hz because that became a thing for a while) because some GPUs and displays don't respond well to custom resolutions and many users are not satisfied with sub-60 Hz refresh rates even when working with productivity applications, because even the mouse cursor appears sluggish in that mode.  And even watching the occasional video on YouTube or whatever might not be a great experience, unless of course it was shot and played back at 24 fps.  Still, glad to hear you've got a solution that works for your specific scenario!
