Inspiron 15 7000, Sharp edged bevel

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 7000. It is a beautifully designed system but comes with a serious flaw. It's bevel edge is so sharp that it certainly cuts your palm if you decide to use touchpad and keyboard while resting your palm on side. I wonder whether Dell staffs themselves prefer to work on their innovations before launching! I am sure I am not alone to encounter this issue. I complained about about this issue with Dell Tech support along with another issue with Microphone. The microphone issue was resolved diligently but they chose not to utter a word about this problem and conveniently ignored the issue. That's disappointing.

I welcome any suggestions if someone has faced this problem and found out a solution. I'll be courteous.

So, I'm imagining the sharp edges on my leg when using it on my lap?  And when it scratches my desk, you'll let me send you the bill to refinish?

That should not be an issue. It is the design of the computer. You should not have any issues using it on a wooden table as well. The system has been tested after design, so there is no such concern.

I have a new Inspiron 7591 and while it looks great, the case has sharp edges.  When open, the lower corners of the top dig into your lap.  I'm also concerned that if I have it on a wood surface and even slightly tip it back when picking up, its going to leave a deep scratch.

Hello,

Do let us know if there are other concerns on the computer apart from one you reported so that we can have that addressed as well before the part replacement.

I have a new Dell G5 15 laptop and the beveled edges are hurting the palms of my hands.  The laptop is less than a month old and my left hand is especially sore.  I've been searching the internet for some sort of cover to put on the edges to soften them but so far no luck.  Dell, do you have any suggestions?

Unfortunately, we do not know of any padding that will help you with the corners. Perhaps, some of the community members will have recommendations.

We hope you are well. We would like to look into these for you. Please share the service tag of the computer over a private message so that we can investigate this further.

If possible, please include a link to the images of the beveled edges of the computer that are causing this as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have the same problem with it resting on my lap, the edges dig into my legs.  I've written Dell and after first dismissing the problem, they replied they would replace the "part" whatever that includes.  Unfortunately, that was 2 weeks ago and despite my following up, silence.

I've posted regarding this recently and am getting the runaround from Dell.  The bottom corners on all previous Dell laptops are rounded.  This one has sharp corners when open.  You can't rest the edges on your legs for long and if you pick it up when open,  you're probably going to eventually end up with a big scratch on your desk.

First Dell told me I didn't have a problem.  Then after some more back and forth, they set up a service visit to replace.  Unfortunately, the replacement part is identical.

I can't believe nobody at Dell noticed this.  They should either figure out a way to fix or replace the computer.

You can return a system with which you're not satisfied in the first 30 days after shipment.  Do so, and order a different model.

The design isn't going to change on this one - if you're not happy with it, return it.

Here is a link to my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 that I just bought. It is extremely sharp.

I put a plaster on mine.

For me it was really only my left wrist that was being irritated by the edge - still rather surprised to have a laptop that doesn't allow you to comfortably rest your arm upon it.

Thanks to all of you who make me feel less alone. Dell is a really good company. Let's help them be even better.

The problem with sharp edges is the way things are manufactured, usually by robots. Had a person worked on this, the contact edges and surfaces would have been smoothly rounded. I hope Dell mechanical designers will run this through a smoothing edger as a last step before installing the case/top. Leaving this edge where one mainly holds and manipulates the laptop verges on negligence.

What I will do is the following:

  1. Tape and seal all openings to the electronics, ports, etc.
  2. Use a file, carbide scraper, emery cloth and finer surfacing materials to round off the bottom three edges.

Hopefully I will not get any aluminum debris inside the case.

I'll report back when done.

Thanks again to all of you for letting Dell know. By the way, this is a problem with many products today; knives in particular. The parts of a product that hands touch should be soft and smooth. We are not machines.
