Inspiron 16 7610, Touchpad random taps and swipes

I have new Inspiron 16 7610 for a month and  it has touchpad problem randomly. Touchpad has random taps and swipes, inaccurate finger tracking. I will contact with Dell but wondering is there anyone has that problem or any simple solution for it?

I also had this problem. After purchase, it worked fine for a few weeks, and this problem appeared from nowhere. I tried different settings and configurations.
Then I figured out a way to fix this issue. It seems like it is not a hardware issue. It is probably firmware/software related. I have been using my laptop for more than two months now without this issue.

Please follow the below steps and let me know if it worked or not.

  • I updated the BIOS. Go to Dell Support Assistant, download all available updates, and restart the laptop. Unfortunately, this alone did not fix the touchpad issue.
  • After that, restart the laptop and press F12 and Go to the BIOS settings and reset to factory default settings. (After that, I changed the battery configuration to "Primarily AC use" mode. No need to change to this if default settings are working)
  • Then logging into the OS, go to the Device Manager and disable the Intel UHD graphics under display adapters.
  • Once it is disabled, your screen resolution will change to 3072x1920. You can adjust the scaling setting as per your preference. Mine is set to 200%. So once the scaling is done, it doesn't see any difference when enabling or disabling the Intel UHD graphics.
  • Check the touchpad is working or not. You can enable the Intel UHD graphics again if it is working fine.
  • I also changed the Nvidia control panel to set the 3D and PhysX settings to Nvidia GeForce RTX.

These are all the steps that I followed which fixed my touchpad issue. So I am not sure which one of these exactly fixed the problem, or maybe all the combination is required. So follow these steps and see they will fix your problem. Cheers!

Glad to hear that it is working for you. If you have followed all my steps, you could now enable Intel UHD graphics again. It should work fine. Until Dell addresses the issue and provides a new firmware update, try to avoid changing settings on BIOS.

Why would Dell be replacing parts in these laptops if your solution worked? My laptop went back, came back "repaired" and within 24 hours was almost useless again. I spent 2 and a half hours with Dell support and they couldnt solve it. Now I'm (still) waiting for a replacement laptop. There is a hardware problem with some of the touchpads in this series of laptop - there are issues all over the internet - however judging by some reviews there are a lot with no problems. Hopefully my next laptop is one of these. BTW my spec is identical to yours. i7, 16gb, 1tb, gtx3060. Since I bought the laptop on 25th November I had maybe 10 days total use out of it.

What I suggested is a workaround to fix the issue. When I was buying the laptop, I saw the reviews about the touchpad issues, but I still went ahead and bought it, assuming my laptop would not have these issues.

After I purchased and worked with my laptop for a week or so, I was so happy that I was one of the lucky ones to get the laptop without the touchpad issues. But, unfortunately, after 2 or 3 weeks the problem appeared and sometimes the touchpad does not work at all.

But I never tried to hit the touchpad or press the touchpad hard on the surface. I didn't try to remove or replace as people suggested here. Also, I can't afford to give my laptop to repair as I don't have a spare laptop for my personal use.

So, I tried different settings and configurations, and what I suggested above was worked for me. Now my laptop is old around three months and as I recall I was able to fix my problem at the last end of November and I have been using my laptop without any issue for more than a month now.

I know that software and firmware configurations worked for me. However, I haven't seen a single review saying that replacing the parts or laptop fixed the problem. People get the issue even Dell replaced the part or replaced the laptop. I have seen many reviews like that.

That means Dell can't find the root cause. Like every other place, they are just following the process. If there is a faulty part, they will replace it. The fault may not be in the touchpad and could be a motherboard problem for all we know.

People mentioned that it worked for a while, and it didn't after some time. So, this issue may start when someone changes the default BIOS configuration.

Because a portion of people will use the laptop as it is, the other portion like me will make changes as per their preferences.

I think that portion is facing these issues. This is my opinion only. I could be 100% wrong. I have nothing to gain here, and I am only trying to help anyone who has this issue. So, anyone is free to follow the steps that I suggested above to see if it is working.

Cheers!

Just received my 7610 two days ago.   Issued with track pad (exactly as mentioned and seen on various youtube clips).   Not worth waiting for a fix, I started the return process. Spoke to Dell support, not a documented technical issue with the trackpad.     I started the return process, updated drivers through the Dell support feature, update other drivers that were pending, disable/enabled the UHD driver.    After all of that, and a reboot, the trackpad is working!.   I am cautiously optimistic a driver update will be a permanent fix.  If not, laptop is going back to Dell.    Never had a Dell issue before.     I would jump to a Mac, but don't want to bother with relearning software.

Glad to hear those steps I mentioned worked for you. Also, make sure to go to the BIOS settings and reset to factory default settings. (after that, I also changed the battery configuration to "Primarily AC use" mode). However, now I don't get the trackpad issue anymore.

It seems replacing the hardware doesn't fix the underlying issue, as per many reviews I have seen so far. As I think, the issue lies with the firmware. I hope the problem will be fixed when you receive your laptop. If not, please try the below steps. It worked for several people and me.

  • I updated the BIOS by going to Dell Support Assistant, download all available updates, and restart the laptop.

Hi everyone, (sorry for my english, I'm french)

I purschased my Inspiron 16+ laptop since few months and still had this issue from the beggining. Today I don't have my wireless mouse so I have to use the touchpad, I could the that the problem was very annoying.

I have read all the responses in this topic, and tried some tricks.

Here are the manipulations that I have done to make the touchpad work correctly (not perfect but more usable) :

  • First of all I disabled the power management from the I2C HID device,
  • Then, I have set the touchpad sensibility to the maximum,
  • After, I have rescalled my screen resolution to 175% (still in 3k).
  • To finish I have rebooted the laptop to "apply" all the settings correctly.

Sometimes you may have little bugs from your mouse, I think it depends on the page resolution, for example in some Windows settings pages.

So apparently the problem is not with the touchpad itself, but rather with the graphics settings.

I've noticed that Windows 11 resets the Power Managment tab checkbox after reboot - sigh. You may need to uncheck this box after every reboot if you are using the touchpad. I'm still working on a way to make this setting "sticky" - probably a registry setting.

I believe, as noted above and previously, that the issue is the firmware for the SPI/I2C controller in the chipset. I don't know if Dell, Intel or Microsoft "owns" this code, but it needs to be fixed in the Inspiron 16+. Here's the simple work-around that solved the problem for me (I have the i7-11800H model running Windows 11; YMMV):

- Open the Device Manager
- Open System devices -> Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - 43E9
- Click on the Power Management tab
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and reboot.

I have the Inspiron 16plus 7610 since 12/1 and have had the touchpad issue since the beginning. Dell has sent techs to my location twice for failures related to resetting OS, first replacing MB, then SSD and saying each would fix the touchpad issue also. Nope. Touchpad issue still present. Dell then replaced the touchpad at the Dell Repair Depot. 36 hours after the system returned the touchpad issue is again present and even a bit worse.

I tried the steps listed above by udeshplus but they didn't solve the issue and it continues.

I guess I will try the steps listed by wanders78746.

This is beyond frustrating and disappointing. I regret spending the money on this device and now I am stuck with it until I can save up for another 5 years.

How is it that some of the devices do not have the issue and others do?

Hi

I have the same issue.Inspiron 16 Plus. It worked great the first month but the last month I've had loads of trouble with the trackpad. I've been using the trick of closing the lid and that worked well, but the last few weeks it's not been working so well. In fact, I'm having to close the lid every 5 minutes now. However, after reading this thread, I have turned off scaling, and the problem has disappeared!!! The downside is I have to use a magnifying glass to see the screen.  I'm going to soldier on with scaling off for a few days, and if the problem with the trackpad doesn't come back, I will try changing the display resolution.
