Inspiron 5580 - additional drive

According to the service manual (link below) there is room for a laptop hard drive or SSD.  However, the drive holder and/or cabling for the drive may or may not be there since it came with an M.2 SSD.  Best suggestion is to open the back and look.

My Inspiron 15, 5577 model came with an M.2 SSD and there is space for the extra drive and cabling but no mounting plate for a hard drive.  I installed a full size SSD and it mounted "fairly tight" in the drive space.

This model has one M2 socket you are already using that however you can replace the hdd with a 2.5 inch ssd  sata max 2TB.You could goto the crucial website and let it scan your Dell system it will automatically display parts that are compatible.

Sounds like you and I have a thing or two in common --  I'm a new Dell 5584 user looking to install my Seagate Firecuda SATA 2.5in drive.  I'm going to try to install Win10 on it, so when I add a DAW, it will find the Directory Structure of Windows.  I've used Cakewalk, Pro Tools, Cubase, etc., and found that they (mostly) install, they put Libraries and linkable program modules (like .dll's) in C:\Windows\Program Files and other "Subs" that the primary ".exe" uses at runtime.  I choose the Secondary Drive (by using a "Custom Install") to offload the Primary (SSD) Drive and Isolate its traffic.

You're in Nashville -- and "Probably" a musician.  I've been in Country Music most of my life -- I was in Country Music Radio for decades (on the air), and play Pedal Steel (have an Emmons and a Sho-Bud, with appropriate amplifiers, etc.)  Any of that familiar ?

Just thought you might have a similar background and wanted to touch base !

I have a Franklin D-10 and a GFI D-10 so we have something in common.  I've been playing pedal steel since 1969.  I'm in Florida, not Nashville.  I worked for Tommy Cash for 7 years (in Florida) and Tommy sponsored me to get into the R.O.P.E. association.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15, 5577 (sold as a gaming laptop) that I use in my recording studio for on-site recording.  It came with an M.2 SSD and space to add either a laptop size hard drive or full size SSD.  I couldn't completely clean up the Dell image for recording and was getting a dropout about every 8 minutes.  Resplendence Latency Mon also showed audio handling problems.  I installed an SSD in the allotted space and made it a dual boot system.  The original Dell disc image for regular PC applications and the second Win 10 install for recording.  The second install only has Win 10, needed device drivers, recording software and the drivers for my MOTU 4pre and a Korg control surface.  The "recording" install is perfectly clean and works great for recordings.  I did a 3 hour band gig recording and NO problems.  I don't mix or master on the laptop, all recordings are transferred too my desktop DAW system for whatever I need to do to each track, mixdown and finally mastering with Izotope Ozone (I have the latest Ozone 9).
