Inspiron 5749 - Maximum Memory - More Than Specification

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5749 laptop, and it already has 8GB of memory. As per other laptops it is a SODIMM DDR3L and configurations of 4GB and 8GB are supported.

I can purchase a 16GB DDR3L SODIMM module. Having 16GB will help a lot when running a VM.

Although the configuration is stated to be maximum 8GB, this may be because at the time of manufacture, the 16GB SODIMM was not available.

Since the 16GB DDR3L SODIMM has the same pin outs etc., as per the 8GB DDR3L SODIMM, will the 16GB DDR3L SODIMM work in the 5749 Insipron ?

Thanks and regards,

Shadmeister.

Thank you for your message.

This system does not support memory beyond 8GB & there is no BIOS update available for this model post may 2016. This is due to the limitation of the system.

The maximum memory is what was tested and is what is supported. Unless they updated the BIOS to accept a higher capacity it may or may not work. Either way it wouldn't be supported and you would have to test it out on your own.

Hi Beamermt79,

Thanks for the reply.

How would i be able to ask DELL formerly if the BIOS will accept 16GB ?

Not bothered if not supported - but if the BIOS does not allow/recognise 16GB, then no point in trying.

Shadmeister.

Dell's official documentation states 8 G max -- so too does Crucial, which tests and guarantees its RAM will work.  Since it doesn't show anything over 8G support - and given the age of the system -- the odds of 16G working are very remote -- and not something anyone will guarantee.

Hi,

I think that Crucial state 8GB is the most since Dell state this in their manual. Dell state the configuration is not supported - so it may work.

The other aspect is the BIOS - without Dell stating that is definitely not configured - seems odd that a BIOS will not allow a specific amount of memory.

Hi Ramesh,

Thanks for the reply. I checked the processor and it does support upto 16GB, but if the BIOS is restricted to 8GB, then no problem, but sad that it does not.

Thanks and regards,

Shadmeister.

What if I buy 8G memory but with a higher frequency? What is the maximum frequency that is supported?

Actually, at least with the latest BIOS (A13 from 09/02/2020), 16GB RAM does work on this model!

Although an affordable 16GB stick of DDR3L is not easy to find right now, if just for the sake of up to date information, I  wanted to confirm that it is doable!
