Inspiron G3 15 3590, hinge broken, #24

Not sure how to go about this, but I bought my unit around Oct 2019 so it is fresh out of warranty. Just a couple weeks ago, I stopped myself from closing the lid because of this cracking noise. Sure enough a screw fell out while I was checking the back, but the screen still actually works, and I have no other issues with it.

Had a hard time contacting the local distributor for assistance, had to wait a week for a repair quotation, and am being asked Php 18,720 (roughly USD 350) to get the necessary parts before they proceed with repairs.

Just found these similar hinge issues today, and am wondering if the local distributor had that quotation wrong.

Resolved: Dell Hinge Issue

So sorry to hear about your hinge issue, it's difficult to believe that this is still occurring after all these years and after all the money it's such a shame for two decades we were loyal Dell customers (1998 to 2018).

About three years ago in 2018 UNBELIEVABLY the same hinge issue plagued our Dell 7537 (which we purchased NEW from DELL in Jan. 2015 for about $1,500).

Doing a quick search... this issue dates back to 2015 if not earlier.

Here is the thread that helped us:

Contacted Dell support for assistance, and since my unit is out of warranty, they directed me to the same local distributor for assistance.

Sad, why couldn't this back cover pop off within the warranty coverage, like everyone else's here? Seems I have no choice but to shoulder that USD 350 repair because I took care of it a little more too much.

Should've clarified I live in a country where the warranty only goes up to one year and cannot be extended.

Thank you. I did pullout the laptop from the distributor's and am contemplating on fixing the issue myself.

I asked the service center why they were going to charge me so much for a hinge repair and it was because they needed to place an order for the entire back cover. They couldn't give a direct answer if my laptop's entire back cover is going to be replaced. From what I've seen in some videos you probably don't even need to replace anything.

A couple guided Youtube videos gave me the boost to fix my laptop issue. And instead of 350USD, i shelled out 6USD, which included a set of precision screwdrivers I get to keep.

The state the hinges were in when I opened it up was amazing. By then they've gotten so tight you'd think they're actually ninety degree brackets of some sort.

Anyway, would not recommend if the thing is still under warranty, becuase it's a sure way to get your claim discredited.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read and respond to my rantsm

Do you have the link for the videos you used? I'm unfortunately going through the same nightmare

this is the one i followed. i don't know what language the guy is speaking in, but the way he went about it was easy enough to follow. i believe the adhesive used was superglue and cotton, as most google top searches suggest.

again, i only did this because my warranty ended, and i felt the distributor didn't give me any other option. hope this helps.

I, as it seems many before me, have had the same issue of the hinge breaking and it therefore splitting the casing around my screen.

I've messages Dell support, hoping that as it is clearly a known issue they would be supportive. But they just seem to run on 'it's out of the warranty period' and then shut down.

Has anyone eventually had their laptop sent to Dell and had it repaired, if so how much was it? I see in prior posts a mention of 350USD, was that the final total, did they add any further costs?

Still can't believe a brand like Dell would sell such poor quality machinery. My previous laptop was a Samsung and it lasted 7 years! My previous one to that lasted six.

I won't be buying Dell again.

I just had this happen to my dell G3 15 exactly - was looking up info on soldering tips, started to close it to put it down and I heard that cracking noise. Two screws fell out of the back and the back plastic cover for the hinge started coming apart. Now, my screen is very unstable and I leave it open out of fear that closing it will only make it worse. Any solutions?
