Its about time "Service Mode"
Dell has finally started to introduce "Service Mode" for laptops.
Imitating HP's long time "Shipping Mode"
To enter Service Mode:
- Shut down your computer and disconnect the AC adapter.
- Hold key on the keyboard and press the power button for 3 seconds or until the Dell logo appears on the screen.

- Press any key to continue.
- When the ready-to-proceed message appears on the screen, press any key to proceed. The computer emits three short beeps and shuts down immediately.
Once the computer shuts down, you may perform the replacement procedures without disconnecting the battery cable from the system board.
To exit Service Mode:
- Connect the AC adapter to the power-adapter port on your computer.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer. Your computer will automatically return to normal functioning mode.
This option is very useful if you are shipping the laptop air or ground.
It may also help to reset a laptop???
If you can enter SM would holding down the power button drain the system of residual static electricity???
I can't wait till I get a laptop that has this option.

I used the "B"+Power Button to enter Service Mode to do a fan swap, and found that it did NOT automatically come out of Service Mode after the next plug-in power up. It was if the battery was completely missing, and would work only with the charger plugged in, even though it showed "100% charged" in Windows and F12 BIOS displays.
I stumbled on to this fix: Before reinstalling the cover, I unplugged the battery from the motherboard, and just plugged it back in, maybe about a minute later. The momentarily-accursed "Service Mode" is now off, and battery function is restored.
