Laptop Battery Compatibility

Inspiron 5547

Inspiron 5547

Hello,

I have a question regarding battery compatibility for my Dell Inspiron I15-5547-A20 laptop. Currently, it comes with a 3-cell lithium-ion battery rated at 43.5WHr and operates at 11.1V (WYT3M94Q model). However, I'm considering upgrading to a 4-cell lithium-ion battery with a higher capacity of 58WHr, but I noticed that it operates at a lower voltage of 7.4V (i.e. OPD19 model).

My main concern is whether this voltage difference (7.4V versus 11.1V) would pose any compatibility issues or potential risks to my laptop's performance and safety.

Could you please clarify whether it's safe to use the 4-cell battery with the lower voltage in place of the original 3-cell battery?

Thank you for your assistance.

The system will work with either battery and adjust for the lower voltage of the larger battery.  That said, this is a 10-year old system, so new OEM batteries will be very hard to find, and when you do find one, be sure you get the manufacture date from the seller -- the battery may be years old -- so since you'll be looking for an aftermarket battery, buy from an established seller with a good track record.  These batteries range from excellent down to abject junk.
