Log in issue

Hello, I go to log into my Dell laptop and I put in my pin and it says you can’t sign in with this account. Try a different account. How do I fix this. This is the only account that I have on my laptop and I use it for work. Please help ASAP.

Hi

Please can you confirm the Make Model and OS, along with any configuration details like touch screen, backlit keyboard, SFF or tower etc etc.

Try

Quick Fixes

  • Restart the device: A simple restart often clears up temporary glitches that cause the PIN not to work.

  • Use a different sign-in option: On the login screen, select “Sign-in options,” then use your Microsoft account password if available to log in.

Resetting the PIN

  • From Lock Screen: Click “I forgot my PIN” under the PIN entry box. Follow the prompts to verify your identity and set a new PIN.

  • From Windows (if logged in with another method):

    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.

    • Find PIN (Windows Hello), and click “I forgot my PIN.”

    • Enter your password, then follow prompts to create a new PIN.

Advanced Solutions

  • Delete the NGC Folder (for corrupted PIN data):

    • Log in with an admin account, or boot into Safe Mode.

    • Open File Explorer and enable “Hidden items.”

    • Navigate to: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC

    • Delete the contents of the NGC folder.

    • Go back to Sign-in options to set up a new PIN.

  • Undo recent Windows Updates: If the error started after a major update, reboot into Recovery (hold Shift while clicking Restart), then navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.

  • Startup Repair: Boot into Recovery, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

Additional Help
  • If none of the above methods work (for example, if you cannot reset your PIN and are locked out), third-party tools or professional recovery utilities may be needed, but use these with caution and preferably as a last resort.
