Migrating OS from HDD to SSD
Hello, my Dell Inspiron 15 (3558) configuration is as follows:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz , 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD(TOSHIBA).
HDD is divided into 3 partitions:
OS on C drive, capacity - 467GB, used space is 159GB only.
Data partitions on E (292GB) and F(156GB).
Since it got slowed down I thought of migrating OS to SSD. Bought 240 GB Crucial SSD. Seen few youtube videos and used AOEMI Partition Assistant, Minitool Partition wizard and Macrium reflect and Disk Genius. Out of this I think 2 programs only allowed me to migrate OS.
Even after changing the boot sequence to SSD in BIOS it is again booting from HDD only.
If I see disk management screen, though SSD is containing OS partition it is only showing as Healthy basic data partition. Boot, Page file and crash dump are not seen as shown below. Please tell me why it is not booting from SSD?

Have you tried disconnecting the old HDD???
Then try booting.

thanks for the reply. I have not yet tried it, but I want to use data contained in E and F partitions, if it is removed (HDD) how to access that data?

Remove the HDD and use a USB to SATA connecter.

That means it has to be removed completely from inside and has to be connected as an external device forever?
However I came across the following thread:
where in @JOcean mentions as follows:
"After you cloned the drive over, did you disconnect the old drive before you restarted the system? You have to shut down the system, disconnect the old drive, then boot the system. If everything looks good, then shut down and plug the old drive back in and restart. The BIOS boot option should be for Windows Boot Manager.".
Is this possible in my case?

So, then you have not tried to disconnect the old HDD???
Then try to boot.
If the system boots, shutdown and then try reconnecting the old HDD.
Then try to boot again.

That link you mentioned was for a system that had the capability to have more than 1 drive. I don't believe that you can have more than one. You have either an HDD or SATA SSD but not both and not an M.2 SSD at all. So no it is not possible in your situation.

Sorry I forgot to mention that, I installed the SSD in CD-ROM slot using caddy. In that case also we can not have both disks in the system?

Are you saying you did or want to install a drive in a caddy? If you did than that is a rather key omission. In that case you obviously are able to have 2 drives both being SATA. Keep in mind that a drive in the optical slot does not operate at the same speed as the internal original drive. The caddy drive would run at SATA 1.5 but still be faster than a mechanical drive.
And FYI the caddy would be something like this.

As I recall the expert @ejn63 has mentioned in the past that the drive in the caddy is not bootable. I have never used one so I cannot verify. The drive in the caddy can only be used for data.

yeah I had installed the SSD in a caddy and put it in place of CD-ROM drive bay. Speed may not be an issue for time being. .
Yeah correct I used that type of caddy only. The image is as below.
As mentioned by @nyc10036, is it not possible to boot from a drive put in the caddy?

It is really very simple.
Remove old HDD and leave it out.
If you are insisting that the SSD should boot using the caddy, then it boots.
I suspect it won't. Your caddy is useless for your intended use.

Remove the Bay caddy.
Remove the SSD from the Bay caddy.
Remove the HDD from the laptop.
Install the SSD in the laptop.
Boot the system from the new SSD installed.
Shutdown the system.
Install the HDD in Bay caddy.
Install the Bay caddy in the laptop.
Boot system.

Thanks, it worked like a charm ! (you are a Genius). Few more questions if it is not annoying.
In The following image:
a) What is ESP (it is part of SSD), why ESP is being shown?
b) The HDD contains a OS partition why it is not visible though it is visible disk management?
c) Is it possible to use the free space of OS partition of HDD?

Thanks for the inputs, you are right after moving the SSD to HDD position it started booting.
