pci express ssd only

Question

I have a Dell Insperion 15 7579 2-in1. This model does not have any place to install a SATA drive, however it does have a pci express M-2 slot. I installed a brand new WD Blue M-2 ssd.  I installed exactly as shown by the Dell video. When I turn it on, it reads No Hard Drive installed. The system diog (F-12) also reads no hard drive installed. My question is Why won't it read my drive?

WD Blue drives come in both SATA and NVMe formats. Your system requires SATA - it will not take an NVMe drive.

Verify the model you purchased with WD to ensure it's SATA. If it's NVMe, you'll need to exchange it for the SATA version.

I thought pcie means it would support NVME....It doesn't? i own a inspiron 3593 i3 10 th gen.....controller says sata/pcie rst controller.........will it support NVME?

The 3593 is a newer system and does support NVMe drives.

I think the original post author mis-interpreted M.2 as PCI Express. M.2 is a connector, which is the physical connection to the SSD. It specifies nothing about the electrical interface. M.2 can support NVMe, NVMe or SATA, or SATA only.

The original post asked about a system sold about three years ago, when the NVMe revolution had just started. It was a feature included on high end systems at that point - not on mid-range systems. The system that person has supports M.2 -- but SATA only. No NVMe.

In the specifications, it lists as PCIe 3 X4.

Thank you for the reply can i ask you one more question? what is the lane on the pci e port of my 3593 laptop? x2 or x4?....i just could not find this info anywhere
