Power issues

Power supply does not work consistently. Purchased a new Dell power supply but get wattage error messages constantly and never a full charge.

Next thing to replace would be the DC power jack.  On most systems that's a plug-in cable -- if you need a reference, post the system model number (i..e, Inspiron N5510, 3593, etc.).

If your Dell laptop's power supply is not working consistently, it can be frustrating and disruptive. Here are steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Inspect the Power Cable and Adapter:

    • Check the power cable and adapter for any visible damage, fraying, or loose connections. If you notice any issues, consider replacing the cable or adapter.
  2. Try a Different Power Outlet:

    • Plug the power adapter into a different power outlet to ensure that the issue is not with the outlet itself.
  3. Check for a Loose Connection:

    • Ensure that the power adapter is securely connected to both the laptop and the power outlet. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause intermittent charging problems.
  4. Inspect the Charging Port:

    • Examine the laptop's charging port for any debris, dust, or bent pins. Use compressed air to carefully clean the port if needed.
  5. Test with Another Charger:

    • If possible, try using a different Dell charger that is compatible with your laptop model to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the charger or the laptop.
  6. Run Dell Diagnostics:

    • Many Dell laptops have built-in diagnostics tools that can help identify hardware issues, including power supply problems. You can typically access these tools by pressing a specific key combination during boot-up (e.g., F12). Check your laptop's user manual or Dell's support website for instructions on running diagnostics.
  7. Update BIOS/UEFI Firmware:

    • Outdated BIOS/UEFI firmware can sometimes affect power supply performance. Visit Dell's official website and check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop model. If updates are available, follow the manufacturer's instructions to install them.
  8. Battery Calibration:

    • Perform a battery calibration if your laptop has a removable battery. This process helps calibrate the battery and may improve charging consistency.
  9. Check for Software Conflicts:

    • Certain software or drivers can interfere with power management. Review recently installed software or driver updates and consider rolling back or uninstalling any that may be causing conflicts.
  10. Try Charging in Safe Mode:

    • Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if it charges consistently. If it does, it could be a third-party software issue.
  11. Contact Dell Support:

    • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with either the laptop's charging circuitry or the power supply. In this case, it's best to contact Dell Support or seek assistance from a technician for further diagnosis and potential repair or replacement.

Remember that power supply issues can sometimes be caused by faulty hardware components, and attempting to repair or replace internal components should be done by a qualified technician, especially if your laptop is still under warranty.
