Restart DBUTILDRV2 problem

Hi, I´m fairly new when it comes to computers' problems aside from what I think is basic stuff.

My laptop has been repeatedly asking me to restart my laptop so the DBUTILDRV2 device finishes setting up. I have restarted my device countless of times yet this notification keeps appearing. Is something wrong with my device? Does someone know how to fix this problem?

Thank you.

You can remove DBUTILDRV2 from Device Manager, reboot machine and allow it for self reinstallation.

Always include exact PC model and version of Windows in your posts.

Do you see this error when booting the PC, or after booting successfully and using it?

DBUTILDRV2 is part of SupportAssist/Dell Update which Dell installed on your PC. If the requested restarts are while doing a BIOS update, that's a known issue.

If not during a BIOS update, you could just disable SupportAssist/Dell Update on the Startup tab in Task Manager.  Then, uninstall SupportAssist/Dell Update and install the latest version for your specific PC model, assuming you need/want them...

@RoHe Hello, thank you for you reply. My device is an Inspiron 15 3525 and it has Windows 11. The notification appears after booting it successfully and using it after some time, and also when I'm doing a BIOS update in Dell Support Assist app. I'm assuming the answer for my issue would be to do your second answer, do you perhaps know of a video tutorial or a step by step link to do this procedure? As I'm not quite sure I truly understand where to go and how to resolve it.

In any case, this update issue isn't really an issue that's harming my device but more of a bug from the Dell Support Assist? So if I don't end up resolving it, no harm will come from it?

Thank you.

@mitskibloom - You can just disable SupportAssist on the Startup tab in Task Manager so it won't load at every boot. You can always check for driver and BIOS updates manually, by entering your Service Tag (don't post it here) on the Support site and it will list the latest drivers specific for your hardware.

You can look at the dates of the driver updates listed to see if any are new, and/or compare the version number of the driver being offered with the version number of that same driver listed in Device Manager to see if you need the update -or not.

As for BIOS updates, it's always safer to do them without using SupportAssist.  If you find a new BIOS update on the support page (new BIOS 1.14.0, posted yesterday), download the BIOS .exe file and save it on your PC.  Then close all open apps and windows.

Navigate to where you saved the BIOS .exe file and double-click it. That will launch the BIOS update. Leave PC entirely alone until the update is finished, even if the PC reboots itself and/or doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Post back if you have any questions...

@R00102  Assuming your PC boots to the desktop, disable or uninstall SupportAssist. You could use Revo Uninstaller (free) to make sure you get it fully removed.

You can always download and re-install it for free from Dell's support page for the G15 5515 if you want/need it.

@RoHe  Assuming I uninstall SupportAssist, will the dbutildrv2 driver be deleted or uninstalled from my device or is there another step to take?

oh and I have a bios update, is it necessary to update the bios through dell update or through the official dell website?

@R00102  - dbutildrv2 is part of SupportAssist so it should be removed when you uninstall SupportAssist.  And I'd use Revo (link in my previous post, above) to make sure there are no "leftovers". Be sure to allow Revo to set a System Restore point first, to be safe.

After Revo runs, it will show you several screens of leftovers (marked in bold font). Check only the ones in bold, never check anything marked it red. Then click Delete and move to the next Revo screen and do the same thing. When Revo is done, reboot the PC.

I personally wouldn't update BIOS using Dell Update.  I'd do it entirely outside Windows, by following the Installation Instructions for "Updating the BIOS from DOS (Non-Windows users)".

You can prepare the required bootable USB stick using Rufus (free). The stick should be no larger than 8 GB and formatted FAT32.  After it's formatted, download the BIOS .exe file from the page I linked above and save it on the USB.  Then follow the rest of the installation instructions at the link

Once the update starts, leave PC entirely alone until you're back at the prompt again.

@RoHe The versions of the dbutil driver that must be removed must be lower than 2.7.0.0, because I have that version of the driver on my laptop now what happens is that every time I turn on my laptop I get the reboot notification and then it disappears, I must to remove the driver and supportassit and install it again from the official Dell drivers page or the driver and supportassit do not affect the normal operation of the system.
Sorry for bothering you a lot with this case, I'm new to Windows updates or drivers.

Don't re-install SupportAssist or Dell Update. Just manually download new drivers and BIOS updates using your Service Tag. (Don't post Service Tag here.) You can check once a month to see if any new drivers/apps have been released for that Service Tag.

Only download the version of driver or software from Dell site that's specifically listed for that Service Tag. A driver or SupportAssist version for a laptop might not work correctly if installed on a desktop and vice versa...
