SOLUTION & FIX Dell Laptop keyboard problem keys not working (Keys 2wsx and others) PHOTOS (Fixed on my series G5)

Dell Laptops keyboard keys not functioning when pressed, fix guide as follows (quick 5 min fix)

1. Unscrew back panel of laptop to reveal inner workings, specifically exposing the battery pack and its screws.

2. Unscrew 3 (or more) screws holding the battery pack in place, remove and set aside the battery pack.

3. Removing the battery pack will expose the keyboard flexible cable connector (shown in picture), identified by its large width and directly adjacent to the battery connection point, connection point to the laptop is locked in place by a thin black plastic piece (Flips from flat to vertical), sometimes covered in tape, it may be in either its locked (down) position or open (up/straight) position. Remove the tape and use a small object to easily pry/flip up the black piece and slip out the keyboard cable from the connection point.

4. Re-insert the cable firmly, facing the metal contact points downward and the plastic face upward, try your best to equally align the cable with its connection point (it may be wanting to favour one side) and firmly push it completely in, whilst holding it firmly in place, use your other fingers or a small tool from before to pry the black plastic piece into its locked (down) position, locking the cable in place. You may like to re-tape the whole piece back down for peace of mind.

5. Re-connect the battery and re-screw its screws, before placing the back panel on, turn on the laptop and test every key, if all works out then go ahead and re-screw the back panel on.

Quick fixes to not working steps:

  • Check the state of the cable connection point contact points, you may like to get some electrical cleaning solution and lightly rub it over the points with a cotton swab, letting it dry before repeating steps 3,4,5.
  • If issue continues, then it may be due to more complex keyboard hardware failure, not the connection point issue (sorry)
  • Layouts of internals may be different for dell laptop models to accessing the keyboard cable, but just the same method follows through, try access it fully and complete the steps 3,4,5.

Conclusion

The forums had no solution to this very irritating issue, the issue I believe is from the poor design of holding the keyboard connection in place with a small flimsy black plastic piece (as dell have even gone as far as placing tape over it, seems they know its not very reliable), any form of impact can flip it up, causing the cable to move out of place due to it being in constant tension due to its insertion angle, causing loss of contact, resulting in loss of specific key function allocated to its specific contact points. I really hope this helps everyone out with this issue, apparently this specific issue costs around $200 - $300 to fix, so congratulations on the savings if this worked out. (My laptop is series G5)

Kind Regards,

Ash

Thanks for the fix! Reinserting that cable seems to have done the trick for now. I too had the problem of the cable not wanting to go in straight and so now inevitably there's some torque on it.

It's been two hours and no issues with xsw2 keys so I would say this fixed it - thanks!

Hi, I've also tried this way back. Even gone as far as trimming off the edge slightly. It works for a while then starts acting up again. This is very terrible and Dell doesn't even acknowledge this. I need a permanent solution. I guess Dell is just profit driven.
