UPDATE - Inspiron 15 Gaming 5577 problem
Changed the CMOS battery. All was well for about a half a day, then the battery apparently died again.
Something appears to be draining a lot of current from the CMOS batterey. What could this be? Is the CMOS socketed? Any ideas?

Did you test the voltage on the battery before you installed it? It may have set on the shelf too long and been mostly depleted.

Welcome to the Dell Community @The__Doctor
What leads you to think the CMOS battery died.
As @Clintlgm asked, did you test the battery. "Should be 3volts"
The CMOS battery should be sealed with 2 wires coming from it.

Yes, don't use any conductive tool to remove battery. With button batteries, you also should handle on its edges. DO NOT touch the +- at the same time, to prolong battery life.
