Using HDMI external display without original display screen connected

Hi,

I have been working on project to convert my Dell Inspiron 15 7000 gaming edition laptop into a desktop type computer. However I ran into an issue where the computer will turn itself off if the original display screen is not connect. I've tried to run the computer without the original display and only connecting an external monitor through the HDMI port without success. The computer shuts itself down ~30sec after booting. It will actually show the display on the monitor for a short time before the shutdown.

Is there a BIOS setting I can change where it doesn't look for the monitor feedback? If not, can I trick the monitor port on the board?

Thanks in advance!

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

No -- the system will not complete POST without a  recognized internal display.  There is no bypass for the screen check.

This is not a correct cut-and-paste answer for this particular laptop.

With the LCD screen disconnected, it successfully completes POST and boots Windows 10, shows the login screen and even lets you log in. It shuts down after 30 seconds though. The OP mentions this.

I had exactly the same problem and couldn't find a software or firmware solution to fix it.

My solution was to remove the LCD driver board - a thin circuit board attached by two screws to the botton of the LCD panel -  from the screen and leave it connected to the cable.

In order to turn the driver board "off", or at least not have it try to drive the now-non-existant LED backlight and panel, I taped a small magnet to the "lid-closed" reed switch located on the small daughterboard that holds the SD Card reader and extra USB port. You can find this by moving a magnet around the board whilst the LCD panel is connected (before you rip the circuit board off) until the LCD turns off.

@NotSureOfAnything hi, I am also trying to use the hdmi display as the primary display. Is there any eDP dummy plug that I can just connect to the board ? Or is your solution still the only way to get it working ?
