Where exactly do I get this SupportAssist tool?

. TOS76>

Hi there

I am a little bit confused and need some little help.
A while back I had SupportAssist shown in the upper part of the screenshot, with a  comprehensive number of tools, but because of some unrelated issue, temporarily uninstalled it.

Now when I try to re-download what I think it is, including from that very page with the  "SupportAssist" image above, I consistently get ".../catalog/SupportAssistInstaller.exe" or "SupportAssistLauncher.exe", which when you try to install/run, only the "SupportAssist Installer" comes up, which only seems to check the PC and at the end tells me all the software is up-to-date or OK & "The latest version is already installed".

The latest version of what?
General software or specifically SupportAssist? For the latter, I used iObit Uninstaller to remove it & in Windows programs, there is no indication of any SupportAssist!

I however want the tool shown, called SupportAssist I had before and is in fact shown on that notebook on the page "/en-us/shop/supportassistforpcs/cp/supportassistforpcs" & called "SupportAssist for Home PCs"

What am I getting wrong and where can I get the direct download link for this tool => SupportAssist?

Thank you in advance

Hi @xprt007 welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Go to SupportAssist for Home PCs | Dell USA and click on Download Now.

Hi @crimsom

Thank you for the response.

As explained above, when I try to install the file at that link you suggest I get "SupportAssistInstaller.exe", which I expected to install that tool shown on the notebook on the page with the title "SupportAssist for Home PCs" under the tab "SupportAssist" with this image.

Unfortunately a screenshot of what I get was deleted as you could see what I mean.

Instead, in the installation window for "SupportAssistInstaller.exe" and "SupportAssistLauncher.exe", the "SupportAssist Installer" shows:

  • Checking your system
Evaluating your PC hardware and software
  • and after a while: Software is up-to-date
The latest version is already installed

Nothing else happens, nothing gets installed and I end it with => OK.

There is no sign of any new installation of anything on the notebook.

Before uninstalling SupportAssist as mentioned with iObit uninstaller, I had this software with many tools, now I do not and that file you suggest does not install it.

Not sure whether by the latest version it means installed software for the hardware or for some SupportAssist, because that is NOT the case and there's no record of it on Windows in the program files.

I have had to use that installer each time, as there is nothing in Program Files to run, no short cut, nothing under installed programs.

That is why I turned to the forum, because I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Is this what you expected?

Regards

Hi @crimsom

Just done so, running it as administrator with the same result.

May be the previous uninstallation process left some residues in the registry, which could be causing some confusion. Could that be the case and if so would it help manually removing them first, though I would need some guidance of exactly which related Dell entry to delete?

Hi @xprt007 having downloaded SupportAssistInstaller.exe, right click and Run as administrator to install the Dell SupportAssist application. The following image is available on Windows 10, 64-Bit Version 22H2. What operating system is installed on the Inspiron 17R 5737 laptop?

Hi @xprt007 your SupportAssist image says XPS 15 9560. Is this a generic image, or do you have XPS 15 9560 which can have Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit? Hopefully Windows 10 64-bit is installed.

Having installed SupportAssist, please use Revo Uninstaller Free to remove SupportAssist, followed by Advanced Scan to remove all remaining files in first and maybe second new window, followed by Restart (not Shut Down).

Hi @crimsom

Very grateful for your help!

... your SupportAssist image says XPS 15 9560. Is this a generic image, or do you have XPS 15 9560 which can have Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit? Hopefully Windows 10 64-bit is installed.

That specific image was generic as I have an Inspiron 17R 5737.

As mentioned, I had used iObit Uninstaller to previously remove SupportAssist. I have used this uninstaller for years and it does its job well, but it seems this time for some reason it did not remove all residue files, which happens to have been at the root of the problem.

In Windows Apps & Features and iObit showed there was no installed SupportAssist, though SupportAssistInstaller.exe kept saying the latest version was already installed and did nothing. This made me suspect there was something left in the registry, files I could later see, but was not sure what to manually delete, which is I why I asked if in case that was the case you could advise on what to do.

With your suggested Revo Uninstaller, in contrast to Windows 10 Apps & Features + iObit, it listed SupportAssist as being present! It did after a scan list countless residue files but could not uninstall that "SupportAssist", because it said that command worked for actually installed programs, which it did not consider to be the case!

I did delete the residue files, rebooted and then the installation worked this time with no problem, with a SupportAssistInstaller.exe I got from the Inspiron 17R 5737 side, just in case they are different.

So ... thank you for your assistance which helped lead to a solution.

Best regards
