The Drive Support Package and the commands that you have listed are by design just for the data disk drives and not the boot drives. The mention of the boot drive version in the release notes is for compatibility sake only. The DSP does install patches that will allow for new models/firmware to be recognized by the cluster should the boot drive be replaced. Since the operating system is using the boot drive, they can't by updated the same way the data disk drives are updated. The boot drive firmware can be updated if they are the Smart Modular brand (rather than Netlist or Sandisk). If you would like assistance with this process, I recommend opening a ticket with Isilon Support.
The Drive Support Package does more than just install firmware. It also (and primarily) applies patches or updates required to Support new hardware or firmware, thus the name. That is why it needs to be installed on nodes that can not be updated using the DSP because they lack boot drives before using the Drive Firmware Package
