vim was removed in OneFS 7.1.0 (I believe).  The primary reason why utilities like vim are removed is simply to reduce the size of our install image.  The UFS partitions on the nodes have limited size, so non-essential stuff is often trimmed.

I'm a huge vim fan and also miss having it on the nodes.  I would suggest that you work with your Isilon SE to file an enhancement request to bring it back...

Oh yes EMC, bring back vim!

One way around this is to minimize the work you're actually doing directly on an Isilon node.

Mount /ifs to a trusted Linux host in your environment and then use that to do your maintenance activities.  Installing vim (or emacs if you're so inclined) is easy on Linux.

Using vim mostly on some wrapper scripts for isi tools... so I would edit directly where the scripts run....

But anyway, just found (once again) how marvelous it is to have all those OneFS releases available as VMs...
