A most vexing problem-Any help?

Hello:

I recently changed the HD on my I8K from the factory installed 30GB 5400 RPM IBM travelstar to the OEM Hiachi 60 GB 7200 RPM HD. Installation of WIN XP Pro SP2 went very smoothly. But after I finished - the system hangs at boot when the WIn XP logo is being displayed with the little dots running under the WIn XP name. I have to do a power off and on and after a cople of times it gets up fine. But once the system is on for a while or even if not on for a while, it suddenly powers off by itself! Now, both these behaviours were present before the new HD but very rarely. The system was great except I was running out of disk space  Now, after the new HD, it is happening every time and it is a pain to reboot and once I boot up, the macine powers off randomly.

The specs of my (aging!) I 8K are :

I Ghz PIII, 384 MB RAM, Sony CDRW, v.90-NIC combo, 32 Mb GeForce, ESS Maestro audio card. The original 30 GB IBM HD. Floppy in modular bay. BIOS A 23-(has been that for over 9 months)

The following peripherals are attached:
Firewire: LG multi DVD writer daisy chained to a Medion (OEM Seagate) 200 GB HD.
NEC USB 2 PMCIA card-attached to this are a DCP 1000 brother printer & a Linksys wirelss USB (WUSB11-v.2.6) adapter. The two USB 1 ports have a card reader, mini USB mouse and a wireless mouse attached.

Software incldes Office XP Pro, Sonic My DVD Deluxe, MM Juke box, Norton AV, Zone Alarm, and I did leave the Dell access direct program on that as well.

I tried leaving off the firewire connections but it did not help. I almost think that this may be a heat issue-except that it happens even if I have just powered up the system and other times it may happen after an hour after starting up.

BTW, I have the new Dell AC adapter I got thru the Dell replacement program.

Please help, as this has taken the joy out of computing and I just hate to junk this great system.

If it were mine I would take it all apart and put it back together hoping there was something loose. Short of that you might remove everything (all drives, all cards, battery) except one memory module and boot to setup screen letting it sit for hours and see if it locks up.  If not, add stuff back in one at time, booting again into setup and leaving it on until you find the culprit. If it locks up at step one switch memory modules if you have two. If you only have one, move it to other slot. If still locks up you likely have either a loose connection or flakey motherboard.

Thanks funtoupgrade. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing for me (!), and I worry about taking it apart and messing up!. I will try disconnecting the peripherals and see what happens. I also cleaned all the fan outlets with compressed air and am running fangui to keep the fans running at high all the time. CPU temps are 45-48 with internet and HD is at 37 degrees. What should these temps be? Thanks.

Why don't you download the Removing and Replacing Parts Guide for your laptop from the Dell web-site and read it over.  The process is much easier than anybody  who has never done it can imagine! The first time it took me about a half hour, now five minutes or less.

Thanks for the encouragement funtoupgrade. I will try opening and cleaning. As long as the fangui keeps the fans running high things are going well but any intensive HD usage like defrag powers the system down.
