AC Adapter error for my VOSTRO 1000

The battery  on my Vostro 1000 laptop is not being charged.

I went ahead and ran the Diagnostic Test after pressing F12 when the laptop  rebooted and got the following error;

     Error Code 3600:0749
     Msg:AC_ADAPTER - Invalid AC Adapter Detected

What does this mean?  Can this be rectified and how?

I need some answer quickly because I use this laptop heavily to edit lots of audio and recordings too, and I'm on the road a lot.

Thanks.

First thing to try is a new Dell adapter - if it doesn't fix the problem, the mainboard needs repair or replacement.

Non-Dell adapters usually don't charge the battery.  If the system is overheating, clean the dust from the heatsink and verify that the fan is operating properly (F12 at powerup - Dell diagnostics).

What if it is not a dell adapter, but the spec is the same. the fan runs, but the laptop seems to overheat if placed on a table for 30 mins or more and then it shuts off.
