Adding 200GB, External USB Hard Drive

I want to increase the storage space on my laptop. I don't want to buy another computer, so I'm debating on getting an external hard drive to use. I don't know to much about add an exteral hard drive and would like feeback before I invest $ into something.

I've found IOgear and Maxtor carry larger exteranal hard drives, I don't know if these are just back -up files or if you can use them like the hard drive on the actual computer.

My end goal is to have an exteral hard drive that I could use to keep and use all my files on, so if my computer bombs I won't lose anything. This would also help keep my machine a ' lean speed machine'.

any feed back, comments, etc would be greatly appreciated.

The USB hardrives work just like you think - they carry your extra files. They dont have quite the performance that your internal one does, but they shouldbe fine for opening documents, etc.

They appear as another drive (say, e:) in windows.

Thanks for your feedback.

Do you have recommendations as far as brands and reliability?

Before i bought my laptop i already had an external 120 gb hd (maxtor). It can be used via USB2 (and USB1, of course) and firewire. I think in this laptop (8600) the USB-support builtin is still version 1.x (I am not sure though). Via firewire though it works like a train (that is: fast and solid).

U ***don't*** want to use a large external HD via USB 1.x, so you should make sure you can connect via FIREWIRE or USB 2. USB 1.x is far 2 slow for transfers of large data ammounts. Firewire and USB2 will give you the performance as were it a normal HD.
