Alienware M15x sound problem.. Please Help.

Hi there, i'm new to these forums an seen few audio problem posts. My laptop warranty has ran out and I has been using headphones from a long time Just today I used the speakers of alienware and discovered this some horrific audio tearing and distortion problem from right speaker.

Here is what is happening for me:

1. The sound becomes horrifically distorted near the mid to top volume levels, however, the volume is not actually loud. Bass frequencies are much more distorted.

2. Using the inbuilt IDT interface, adjusting some EQ levels reduces the distortion a bit, but also makes the sound horrible.

3. I use headphones and they work fine.

Is this a driver problem, build problem or speakers issue? As I said before I have seen many topics on this problem, all of which have not been solved. Hopefully we can sort this out once and for all.

My Alienware was bought direct from Dell UK with the Intel i7, nVidia GTX 260m Graphics card and 8 Gig of ram. If you need any other specs don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks so much in advance,

Hello. When the sound works okay in the headphones but there is a problem in only one of the speakers, it is almost certainly a bad speaker.

I said it is "almost certainly" the hardware. If you want to have complete certainty then you should perform the hardware diagnostics. There is an "Alienware Diagnostics" on the support disk that was supposed to have been included when you bought the laptop. I am not familiar with that diagnostic tool. You should run it (instructions on page 49 of the M15x MobileManual) and see if it tests the audio.

If it does not have a test that that is thorough enough then the other way to test is to return the laptop to the original factory configuration using AlienRespawn-Advanced Recovery. That will resolve all software issues, so if the speaker is still bad then it is a hardware failure. The instructions for performing this operation begin on page 59 of the M15x MobileManual.

If you decide to replace the speakers, the instructions begin on page 105 of the M15x Service Manuals. You can access the Service Manual through the M15x support page.

I have seen many topics on this problem, all of which have not been solved.

I can't figure out if "all of which have not been solved" means that some of them have not been solved, or if none of them have been solved.

If the latter, that surprises me. I think that I provide the correct answer for most of the speaker problems that are posted on the Laptop Audio board. Of course I cannot actually fix anyone's hardware or software problem. It is up to them to follow through with diagnostics and repairs or software fixes. Most people just don't bother to hit the "Answered" button.

I would test it by returning the laptop to the original factory configuration using AlienRespawn-Advanced Recovery. That will resolve all software issues affecting the speaker, so if the speaker is still bad immediately after the recovery -- before installing any updates -- then it is a hardware failure.

It could be a blown speaker where a little piece of it is vibrating and causing the distortion, then when you make enough changes it will get in alignment enough to stop rattling for awhile.

Thank you very much for your Reply. yeah i hav gne through all these things..and found It work fine on headphones. only issue is with its right speaker. So i thought to change windows and see..so 2 days back  i installed windows 8 and its default IDT drivers. and experience the same issue.

but when i changed its sound settings. Disabled all enhancements and changed   sample rate and bit rate to  24bit , 96000 Hz (Studio quality), the speaker start working fine.Thats strange to me
But still give me same issue sometimes  and all i do is rest its setting to default and then putting back to these settings and after pressing test button few times  suddenly it working fine again.. So im confused but the issue, like is it hardware or and driver issue. n what should i do for this.
