Use Dell Command | Update to install Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) drivers for Latitude E5570 / 7275 / 7370 / Precision 3510 / 5510 / XPS 15-9550 / XPS 13-9350 & XPS 12-9250

Dell provides the Dell Command | Update Application on a business client supported platforms to simplify the BIOS, firmware & driver update experience. This application is located under the "Systems Management" section of the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Be sure to pick your system type from the list or enter your service tag to ensure you get the right version for your system.

  • Install the Dell Command | Update v2.2.0 available for the system in the "Systems Management" section to obtain the latest firmware and drivers.

NOTE: The application allows users to download and install the latest firmware and drivers on their systems, including

  1. System BIOS
  2. Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver

Other than above automatic installation, it’s recommended that users download and install the Dell Dock Firmware Update utility (expected to be available to download by August 2016) and Intel HD Graphics Driver manually.

Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) Installation Guide for Latitude E5570 / Precision 3510

The latest BIOS, drivers and Firmware can be downloaded at the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Dell highly recommends installing the following BIOS / Drivers step by step in the prescribed order to ensure optimal performance. Failure to install BIOS, drivers and Firmware in this document may result in undesirable performance.

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) and then connect the Thunderbolt™ 3 (Type-C) connector to the computer.
  2. Search your system model name under Select a Product selection or enter the service tag of your system to locate Drivers & downloads page on the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Change the OS to view all available updates for your system.
  3. Flash the latest Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) available for the system. This is posted in the "BIOS" section.

  3. Then follow the recommended steps of connecting the AC adapter to the TB15 dock first and then attaching the Thunderbolt cable to the computer.
  4. Power on the computer with the docking station connected.

I have a few Precision machines as well with TB3 and the StarTech TB3DK2DPW works with them as well.

The Startech TB3DK2DPW allows everything to work and allows for dual 4K 60.  Been using it for over a week.

It does not charge at all....but everything works.  It is the first TB3 dock that works with dual 4K and can still transfer files at TB3 speeds.  A second charger is cheap.  I just used some velcro to hold the power cable with the TB cable.  Extremely easy and again...everything works!

The Startech TB3DK2DPW doesn't charge the laptop: 

Note: This docking station will not charge your host laptop


So basically you still need your charger plugged in... Not a real "docking station" then, it's a port replicator...

Pino112: I'm also using the ASMedia drivers from Windows, because when using the ones from Dell it don't recognize the Dock at all.

For the Ethernet cable, connection drops when I'm using the RJ45 port on the TB15. Connection also drops when I'm using a USB3-to-RJ45 adapter (Microsoft Surface) connected to an USB3 port of the dock. The same adapter works perfectly fine from an USB3 port on the XPS15.

So I'm forced to either not use Ethernet (I have Wifi AC so I have about a third of the speed of Ethernet), or use Ethernet with my adapter directly connected to the XPS15.

With regards to the monitor, I have a Dell U3415W. Sometimes it works, sometimes after a moment the screen goes black and I need to turn it off and on again, then it works for some time... or not.

I want to share my experiences with the TB15 dock. I do had problems with it on my 5510 running Windows 7, but on 10 it is ok, with the following work arounds

At first, I am NOT using the ASMedia USB drivers from the Dell site, but the drivers that came with Windows 10.

My ethernet cable is connected with the USB-C to Ethernet dongle. I do not have ethernet drops.

I have two Dell displays, one is connected with HDMI, the other using a mini Displayport to VGA dongle. The Realtek ethernet driver has version 10.7.218.2016 and has the date 18-2-2016.

The Thunderbolt Software from Intel has the following versions: Software package = 16.1.47.275, application and Service version = 16.1.47.1, controller version = 16.1.47.2.

I am able to power on and shutdown my 5510 with the button on the dock (even with closed lid).

Dell explicitly states that for most systems they still need their own power even when connected to the TB15 which can provide power. I haven't yet found that necessary but I haven't been using it with any external monitors on my 7510 for looking periods of time. I'm using the 240W adapter and it has been decent so far, my USB hiccups are more related to my mobile broadband card than the dock.

Hey Kylemorris and everyone else!

Did the Startech TB3DK2DPW work out of the box for you? I have a 4k display connect to the dock (display port), and when I connect my XPS 9550 it does detect an additional display - however only dark/grey'ish display shows (there's output, but nothing useable). On the laptop I have tried different approeaches (both duplicate display, extended etc.). All drivers updated. Any suggestions before i also return the Startech dock?

Hi tomk1111,

I actually had the same problem. I found that changing the MST mode to secondary will make the display work but at maximum only 4k at 30hz (1440p at 60hz). What I ended up doing is using a usb-c to DP adaptor and pluged it in the other TB3 port and that gave me 4k at 60hz.

So its not a perfect solution but at least working. Hope these observations are helpful.

The dock barely worked at all with Dell drivers.  I used Snappy Driver Installer to update to the latest drivers and everything worked as expected afterwords.  To add, I am using dual 1080p monitors one in the DP port and the other using a USB-C to DP cable.

So after going through two TB15 docks, i have switched to a WD15 dock and it is working well. The two TB15 docks after a month or two would overheat and drop my second monitor. I got several months out of the second unit by taking the lid off and blowing a fan on it. Dell is no longer doing exchanges on the TB15 so I'm sending it in for a refund. The WD15 has been working well for a week now...we shall see if it can make it past 2-3months... The thunderbolt cord is longer on it and the dock itself is smaller so thats nice.

I'm trying to get the TB15 docking station working with my Alienware 17 R3. following this guide..

When I'm installing the ASM104FWupdate i get an error that says Your Host device is not ready, Firmware upgrade failed!!!. Please reboot your PC then try again.... WHAT to do???

The LAN is OK

The HDMI is OK

USB doesn't work

Power on doesn't work

So I finally got an answer from Dell Support that the TB15 product was discontinued and I should just return it and get a refund.

I had mine since February, it never worked totally or reliably. Was in contact with Dell Quality department a few times, but eventually my TB15 was just an expensive charger.

I ordered the WD15 instead, and given the fact that all drivers are shared with the TB15 (except for the ASMedia ones, which are not needed for TB15) I just plugged the WD15 without going through the full reinstall of drivers, and then magic happened: all was fully working at once!

I have:

- a working ethernet port on the WD15 dock (that's a first!)

- my external monitor (Dell U3415W) working in max resolution and refresh rate (3440x1440@60Hz) through miniDP

- no black screens with the XPS15 lid being open or closed

- all usb peripherals fully recognized (wireless mouse & keyboard, external bd-drive, external hdd, usb stick, ...)

- a TB3 cable long enough to let me decide how I should place my laptop on the desk

- a very small casing compared to the TB15

The only downside is the lack of a USB-C port on the dock, other than that I have a fully working docking station...
