Bluetooth: notebook pin?
Hi!
I´m using a Latitude D 600 with TrueMobile 300 Bluetooth. When I´m trying to use the bluetooth interface for connecting my notebook with my mobile phone, I have to enter a PIN-Code for both devices. Where do I find the PIN for my notebook which I have to enter into my mobile and where can I change it?
Thanks und greetings,
Timlinger

Hi Timlinger,
I was hoping someone would have come up with an answer by now as I have the same problem. I am trying to pair my Inspiron 510m with my mobile phone. The Passkey PIN for the phone is included in it's instructions, but I don't know where to look for the PIN of my notebook. Bluetooth Help explains what the Passkey PIN is for, but it doesn't tell you where you can find it.
Is there anyone out there who can enlighten us?

Hi,
The PIN number is very misleading - you'd think it was a set number, however, this is not the case.
Before you initiate pairing, you'll be asked for a PIN number on the "Master" device. Enter any number and remember it (e.g. 13579).
When pairing takes place, you should enter the same PIN number on your "Slave" device (i.e. enter 13579 on your Palm, when prompted).
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that you cannot pair with devices which you cannot access/use (e.g. other people's devices).
I hope this works. If it doesn't, please post back!
Russell.

This isnt' explained very well for blue tooth. The pin is something you set. In control panel there should be a bluetooth devices. I use the Microsoft SP2, so if you have the Dell blue tooth driver it is different.. but should be easily identifiable. Anyway, turn the automatic discovery off.. Just a suggestion, it takes power and resoure to sit there and look for devices all day, so just do it manually. Then you can add a device by manually disovering it. It will ask you if you want to add a mouse, keyboard, com port.. whatever, have it find ALL. Each device will have to be configured separately. When bluetooth finds the device, you will see them in the list. Click the first one, and click ADD. when you add it, you will get prompted by several choices, Use Default passkey, use passkey that came installed with device (found in product documentation), use a passkey that you can assign, or no passkey. You only want to use NONE for dummy devices like keyboards/mice.. since they can't use one anyway. For everything else, assign a key. This establishes a 2-way link between the notebook and each device connecting to it via bluetooth. So each bluetooth device has a unique connection PIN so a similar device of that type won't be confused, since it has a unique PIN. That's another reason you want to turn automatic discovery off.. if you are in an airport, and your Notebook is "looking" for devices, you may be unknowingly giving people access to your machine.. because they will get notification that a bluetooth radio is in the area and they will be able to gain access once its connected.
anyway, that's how it works. Good luck.
