can't change resolution after installing new video driver

I'm on an Inspiron 500m with Windows XP SP2. The system crashes with a blue screen of death after waking up from sleep mode, or when I plug in or unplug the power cord. The error messages point to the video driver as the cause of this problem (which started after installing SP2).

After installing the latest video driver (Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller released on August 20 2004) either manually or through windows automatic update, the crash seems to be resolved but I can no longer change the resolution of my screen to 1280 x 1024 or 1400 x 1050 pixels (which is the physical resolution of the LCD screen). The now maximum 1024 x 768 resolution is of course not acceptable.

Any ideas are very much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as none of the traditional methods are working.

To update the situation, here's what's been happening. I've used System Restore twice in the past day, going back to a checkpoint from before I first downloaded the update, and it works, briefly. Then the update installs itself again and the resolution reverts back to this new one.

Thanks.

I had this problem, and here is how I fixed it:  went into the display properties, clicked “advanced”, then the “monitors” tab, and unchecked the “hide modes that this monitor cannot display” checkbox.  Switched to the proper resolution and everything is working just fine, despite Windows warning me not to use an “unusable” display mode.

Now I thought there were more display modes, but the only one that appeared after I cleared that checkbox was 1400x1050.  But that was the one I wanted, so I'm satisfied with this solution.

The resolution fix works perfectly indeed, thanks a lot.

My system still crashes after I unplug the power cord, but at least sleep/wake up seems to work fine now (I only tried once).

Thanks again.
