com port not recognized

just asking but is your IR port(if present) enabled?

thanks for answering.  no the ir port is disabled and the serial is set to com1.  the port settings are set according to magellan in the device manager.  the only suggestion they did give that i haven't done yet is to get a serial/usb adapter and try to use it in the usb slot.  50 bucks for their adapter has stopped me so far.

hmm, have you tried changing the address of the port (if it is possible) in BIOS?

yes i changed com1 to com2 in the bios.  this did nothing however since i don't know how to add com2 to the device manager in order to put in the magellan settings.  i think i'm just going to bite the bullet and order the adapter to see if that works.  i guess i can always return it if it doesn't and will only be out the cost of postage.  thanks for your help.
