computer slow

Question

Hi: my daughter has a Dell Dimension 8100 Series,Pentium 4,Processor1>3GHz.Service code 3CLBSO1 128mb ram with windows xp home edition which was upgraded from windows ME  installed in December 2003 it runs very slow and I get an error message Run-DLL eror loading-c:\windows\ bxxs5.dll The specified module could not be found. I am thinking of upgrading the memory since I assume that windows xp proably uses more than windows Me I have talked to Dell about ordering more memory but I keep getting switched around . With what I can find out on the web page there is a 256 mb listed and says I have to install in pairs. My question is do I need two 128 mbs or if I order the 256mb will it come as two 128s also has it got two 64mb and if I add 256 more will that give me 384mb it is confusing to me I am not very computer savy any help you can give will be appreciated . thank you   Wildmanone@hotmail.com

Are you sure its a pentium 4? From what I have read its a pentium 3 with an intel 815 chipset, if I have that right you don't need matched pairs of ram, I would think you have a single stick of ram, so I would get another 256mb from crucial http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Dell%2BInspiron&mfr=Dell&cat=RAM&model=Inspiron+8100+Series&submit=Go

Sorry, I didn't see you were posting about a desktop in a laptop forum, i thought you were talking about an inspiron 8100

Hi Wildman! This the spec for your system memory.   Memory Architecture RDRAM RIMM sockets four RIMM capacities 64-, 128-, 256-, and 512-MB RDRAM Standard RAM 128 MB (minimum) Maximum RAM 2 GB BIOS address F8000h You can actually have 2GB as maximum. That basically means you need to get 4 512MB RDRAMs. Make sure you always have these in pairs. I would personally suggest that you just add another 128MB RDRAM to boost it up to 256MB or you could add one 128MB RDRAM plus 2 256MB to make it all go up to 768MB of RAM in total. Also if you are already having errors on the OS, i would just suggest that you save your files (documents, tax sheets, mp3's, pics...) and call Dell to help you with the OS reinstallation.

thanks for answering doods 79 I am still confused with 128 mb installed does that mean I have two 64 mbs in it now and if I order a 128 mb will it be shiped with two 64s when I go to the Dell website it list a 256 mb but down in the overview it says order in pairs but is confusing to me  thank you  wildman1 also sorry about using the wrong forum do I keep using the insprion or should I switch to Dimension next time I post  thanks wildman 1

Hi Wildman. Checking on your specs you have 2 64MB of RDRAM installed in your system leaving you two free slots to add memory. Here's what you could do, you could add 2 128MB RDRAM to put the system at 384 MB which would be good for running winXP.  Here's one tip, when adding memory to your system you always have to have it in pairs. Hope this helped. :smileyvery-happy:   DellTech

Hi: doods 79 when I order do I get two 128s  When I pulled up Dell Yesterday It showed only a 256mb module for $109.79 and a 512mb I forgot that price and on the 256mb it gave me a Dell part # A0276516 mfg.part # DIT 484 184 pinRDRAM PC800,ECC,unbuffered when I called Dell the girl named Kelly said Dell did not ship ecc. Does that mean that Dell does not carry 128s and if I have to get the 256 mb I will have to order two at a cost of  $219.58? thank you for your help After checkin the Dimension forum this afternoon I see where there is a lot of confusion concerning the 8100

I'm not sure how well this will work with a Dell but download it and see, it should give you info on chipet cpu and ram, see what it says about error correction, you could also look in bios, it may tell you if its ecc ram

Hi Steve 1077 I am not postive I pulled up the spec. page it does'nt say I was going by what the DELL page said when I checked what they had it said ecc,nonbuffered in the overview but when I called the girl said they did not ship ecc but that don't mean much to me because I get the run around from them by swithcing me from place to place when I bought the 8100 the man i talked to seem knowlegeable but since then every time i call i talk with people with accents and is hard  for a poor old redneck like me to understand i like the looks of the NEWEGG site the Dell site that doods 79 sent me Dell has gone up from yesterday at 109.79 to 136 & some change for 256mb thanks for the info
