Cursor jumps around when typing
This has been happening when typing emails in Outlook. It will be interesting to see if it happens while typing this. So far it's been OK. I have a Dell XPS M1530. There it did it just then, the 1530 jumped into the subject field. It always jumps into somewhere I have already typed. So it doesn't just happen in Outlook. It is very annoying. I am using a Bluetooth mouse, but also there is a touchpad just under my hands. Could it be that I bump it by mistake?
I don't know it that's the problem as the touchpad cursor is different to the typing cursor. I'm watching the touchpad cursor and it's not moving. The typing cursor is behaving itself now. I have just moved the touchpad cursor up the screen a bit and the typing cursor is still behaving itself. Sorry about all this running commentary on what's happening, but it was misbehaving before and now it's not.
Does anyone have any clues on this problem? While I am typing my hands are well clear of the touchpad. It just jumped again, and it did not jump to where the touchpad cursor was, so it's not related to that.

Hey, the business card over the mouse pad works! ...sometimes. Other times, the problem persists. Getting warmer, I guess...

I have not read this entire thread, as it has gone on a long time. I had this same issue, but it was not the fault of the computer, drivers, mouse or anything else. It was the fault of the operator. I have very large paws and I have never taken a single typing lesson, so I have very poor typing skills.
After a month or so I found out that what was causing my cursor to jump around was a very lazy thumb. It kept touching the touchpad, and when it did the cursor could appear anywhere.
To fix the problem, go into the control panel and to the touchpad settings and turn the sensitivity down so it is less sensitive. If your problem is similar to mine, that will do the trick. It may take a few times at adjusting it depending on your thumb and how lazy it is.
For the ones with the jumping cursor with a mouse, clean your mouse. You will have to disassemble it to clean the interior. Also with the optical mice, check the optics on the bottom of the mouse. Make sure they are clean. If you have a finger print on it, it can cause jumpy cursors. Also look at the surface you are using. Glass is bad. Something with an opaque surface is best. The thinner any clear surface on top of an opaque surface is better.
Not saying this will fix all your problems, but it may help some of you.

Yes I agree, lol.. I had suggested that they try to slow down the sensitivity also.

It's funny, sometimes making a change works for a little while, but then the problem persists. I just turned off my mouse pad entirely, but I'm still experiencing the same problem. Now that I turned off the mousepad, I'm using a wireless mouse. But I've tried only using the mousepad and I still have this problem. Any other suggestions? Are people just stuck with this problem? I was really surprised that I couldn't find an official solution from Dell.

Not that I don't have a touchpad, just not in control panel. I have an Inspiron N5030 running Windows 7 Home Premium

I hate it when people call other people lazy or stupid or anything else when they have no idea what they are talking about. I have had this cursor problem on 2 different dell laptops. Neither which is a touch screen. They are both regular lat tops and have keyboards on them. You need to quit jumping to conclusions without a clue. YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!

Touchpad controls are usually found in the MOUSE section of the control panel. In many cases, the controls do not give you much control. You can download most any pad driver to replace the original. Toshiba and others have many pad drivers available that have a wide variety of variables.

Kirk thanks for the reply. I have a new inspiron M531R-5535. I did not want touch. It is just a regular laptop. It is running windows 8.1. My last inspiron did the same thing it was windows 7. Maybe you told me what I needed to know but I'm still not sure how to proceed to fix it. If you are going to reply again please don't take terminology for granted. I have taught myself how to get around on computers but I am not from the generation who does it easily. Get it....go slow. Just a side point for all the people who are so quick to call others stupid. I am a dance teacher. And I could write you a step by step guide how to do a dance but I bet you couldn't do it unless you were a trained dancer. So step by step instructions don't mean the same to all people. thanks again, Pamela

finfan313:I don't have access to your earlier posts. Please restate your problem.
If you have problems with the cursor jumping around when you type, the easiest solution is to download TouchFreeze. It's a free program that runs all the time to shut off the pad when you begin typing.

Thanks again fro your reply. I venting about an earlier incident sorry lol. But my cursor does jump around. I don't believe that it is due to me touching other keys or the pad. I can't think what you can touch to get it to do that if you wanted it to can you? I will try what you are saying. Anyway, I have a dell inspiron running windows 8.1 and my older dell running 7 both did the same thing. In the middle of typing it would jump to another part of the sentence or paragraph. Like I said I don't know of any key that would allow you to do that. Thank you again, Pamela

Thanks for the info about TouchFreeze. I tried it, but like everything else I've tried in the past, it didn't help.
