Cursor jumps around when typing

This has been happening when typing emails in Outlook. It will be interesting to see if it happens while typing this. So far it's been OK. I have a Dell XPS M1530. There it did it just then, the 1530 jumped into the subject field. It always jumps into somewhere I have already typed. So it doesn't just happen in Outlook. It is very annoying. I am using a Bluetooth mouse, but also there is a touchpad just under my hands. Could it be that I bump it by mistake?

I don't know it that's the problem as the touchpad cursor is different to the typing cursor. I'm watching the touchpad cursor and it's not moving. The typing cursor is behaving itself now. I have just moved the touchpad cursor up the screen a bit and the typing cursor is still behaving itself. Sorry about all this running commentary on what's happening, but it was misbehaving before and now it's not.

Does anyone have any clues on this problem? While I am typing my hands are well clear of the touchpad. It just jumped again, and it did not jump to where the touchpad cursor was, so it's not related to that.

Apparently you and I are on different threads in this forum. Your "joke" was an attempt to assert yourself above those writing to complain about the obvious issues that have not been addresssed by Dell. You showed nothing but ignorance, arrogance, and showed to others on this forum that you are in fact a pompous ass. In your attempt to debase me you went ahead and proved my case for me, congratulations. The fry cook tried his hand at rocket science, again, and failed miserably. If you would do everyone on this forum and stop "helping". You are in fact no help at all and I will say again that I feel a deep sorrow for anyone that may have received your "help". Don't worry about technically supporting us, there are many people on here much more qualified then yourself.

The people who have really helped are those who have pointed out there is a real issue here. The issue has not been addressed properly by Dell and it still remains in many machines. To your point on how I would treat my IT personnel, my staff is intelligent and if at any time they thought it was okay to talk down or condescendingly to someone they are providing support for it would not be tolerated. I have had the great fortune of never finding someone like you in my IT department.

Have a great day, and thanks againg for all your help.

My wife had the 'jumping cursor' problem on her new Dell Inspiron N5050 - resolved after going to Control Panel >> Mouse >> Pointer Options and unchecking Enhance Pointer Precision.

You're not alone! I  have been having the same problem since i got my laptop 3.5 years ago. It is STILL not fixed. I had to pay 150$ to Dell right after i got my Laptop. They said it was a software issue and not a Hardware problem. Software is not covered under warranty. Well dang I just bought my laptop it was a week old when the Jumping Cursor started. It's very frustrating!!

Hi, I have a two week old dell Dell Latitude E6520  with the jumping cursor problem and it is driving me crazy!   Keyboard has already been replaced and didn't help. Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers did not help.

DELL, are you listening????... this is a known issue! There should be an easy to find solution available on your knowledge base!

I finally resolved by continuing to tinker with the options in the Dell Touchpad settings. Access in the Control Panel via Mouse settings. I adjusted all settings, so can't tell you exactly which one(s) worked. Keep tinkering!

This problem is due to an overly sensitive pad. You don't necessarily have to touch it when typing, only come close. Some pad drivers have options to de-sensitize the pad. A good solution is TouchFreeze, a free utility that turns off the pad when you begin typing and turns it back on when you stop.

I'm glad to find this forum.  Now I don't feel alone (or crazy!).  I've been using laptops for years, including other Dells, and have never had this problem of a demonic cursor that pops round --- worst of all causing emails to get sent while I'm in the middle of typing!  I am absolutely not bumping the touchpad.  The cursor is just popping around--- very much like others have described.  Latitude E6420 -- it's been behaving this way ever since my IT dept. issued it to me when I started this job 2 weeks ago.  I'm going to try some of the suggestions here and see if anything helps.  Can't believe this has been discussed here for 3 years now!

And I've had it happen on three different models of Dell laptops! Are you listening, DELL???!!

So far I found only one workaround that solves the issue for me - namely plug in a separate mouse and activate the option "disable touchpad & pointstick when USB mouse present" in the DELL Pointing Devices software.

However this is just a workaround and when the external mouse is unplugged from the laptop the cursor goes crazy again when I type. Would be interested if anyone has a solution that works for that problem.  This computer is certainly almost unusable without this workaround.

Tomorrow I might try changing the touchpad to see if it gets better.

Soooo where is TouchFreeze? I want to try it.

I would also like the 150$ i paid to Dell to have this problem fixed over 3 years ago, and it's still not fixed. I don't know if i'll ever buy another Dell computer again. As i am typing this out my cursor jumped 3 times adding my letters to other words. It's very frustrating to say the least!

I downloaded TouchFreeze to my laptop and I have typed a bunch of sentences and my cursor has NOT jumped once, Not even here. Thank you!! I'll let you know in a day or two if it still works.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded touchfreeze myself and it indeed seems to fix the problem (see http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/)

I reactivated all the settings for my touchpad and now it works without the jumping cursor problem. I even reset the touch pressure back to the middle range and reenabled mouse optoin "enhance pointer precision"  everything still seems to work fine.

Let's see in a few days time if it still works

YAY!!! I sure hope this is the fix. So far so good!

Touchpad changed on my laptop today - didn't fix the issue either!

So the only valid workarounds (for my laptop) are

1/ use TouchFreeze application

OR

2/ connect an external mouse and use the option "disable Touchpad & PointStick when USB Mouse present"
