D Series Issue: End Program - Sample
I have observed this behaviour on a couple of D series laptops with Intel 2100 Cards installed. When shutting down an End Porgram request appears naming the program "Sample" as not responding. There is a timer present at the end of which supposedly the program will be stopped. When the progress bar fills, however, there is the option to either ignore or end program. The laptop will not shut down unless you select End Now.
In attempting to trouble shoot the program I began running down the process list trying to find out what "Sample" could possibly be. If I stop Zero Config then the message does not appear on shutdown. With Zero Config running, however, the message will appear every time reguardless of the 2100 adapters state (eg Enabled, disabled, radio off/on, etc). I have been unable to replicate this error reliable on other laptops with 2100s. It seems to be an "If it's got it it's got it but if not you can't make it do it" sort of issue.
There are no newer versions of the 2100 drivers.
There are no windows updates available(except for the wireless security update but that just completely hoses the wireless card anyways).
Laptops known effected are 1 D800 running XP (obviously) and 1 D600 also running XP.
Any ideas?

I have a D800, and get this "sample" error every time I shut the PC down. I don't have the Intel graphics, I have the GeForce 4 4200
Do Dell even read these forums?

same problem here, bought a DELL 600m, has the 2100 intel wireless pro card,
was installed as XP, format it, and installed 2000, got the "end program - sample" twice
everytime i try to shutdown my laptop
bothered by this weird problem for 2 or 3 days, cannot install MS SQL 2000......
thought was nimda, but no virus found on system.
thanks for this thread, it works fine now
first remove intel pro set software (control panel, remove software...)
then uninstall the driver, open the wireless connection manager and in the properties, uninstall it...
reboot, then re-install the newest driver from dell website,
SQL 2000 installs normally, so does the shut down, i am happy

For your information...This fix also applies to the ProSet 2200 on the Lattitude D800. I followed the above steps and solved the problem. The only thing I did in addition was to delete the ProSet directory before I installed the new driver to be sure I had the 'cleanest' re-install possible.
I may have caused this problem myself some weeks ago when I ran the Windows Networking Wizard in an attempt to network with my desktop for print sharing. It seems that the problems started about the same time...Not sure about that but I'd bet that was the issue.
Thanks for your posts...Seems that we can help ourselves better than Dell Support as I was on hold for 30 minutes with them and then the line disconnected.
