Dark screen after standby

Question

I need some help. Whenever I try to resume from standby with my Laptop it only shows me a dark screen. I can see that the screen itself is on but it just stays black and I can hear that the laptop is resuming and goes to the login menu. Only shutting down and resuming with the power button brings my laptop back to work.

I have an Inspiron 1100 running on Windows XP Professional SP 2. I already tried to fix this problem with Fn + F8 and Fn + ArrowUp. I also changed the brightness in the BIOS but it didn't help.

Does anybody have a solution for this problem?

I have the same problem - I also think this problem affects my D-Link wireless card - as it too seems to disconnect - I have to physically remove it and then it comes back online.......   but I certainly have the same problem if I step away from the laptop for a bit, I presume it goes into standbby and I have the identical symptoms....   interestingly - the power management I have set in XP sp2 is to basically not go into standby/hibernate etc..    but still ahve the problem

ust spoke with Chat support, in the Control Panel , Power Settings under the tab that discusses what to do when you close the lid, I had mine set to DO NOTHING - he said to change it to Standby... so I'll see how that works.. I had every other setting set to NEVER for troubleshooting purposes....

Screens failing to come back on after going in to stand by is a fairly standard complaint among a large variety of Dell notebooks.  I've had luck curing the issue on my Dell700m by going to the Intel website(it has Intel) graphics and updating the drivers to Intel's latest.

Dear Ken   Thank you very much for your advice. Downloading and installing the newest driver for my Intel 82845GM Graphics Controller solved my dark screen problem.   Thanks Hansruedi

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I am experiencing exactly this problem. After resuming from Standby, if I leave the computer for more than a few minutes, the screen goes black (turns off), as it's set to in Power Management. The problem is that I can't get the screen to turn back on! The machine is on, and I can enter keypresses to get the computer to restart, shutdown, etc., but none of the keypresses turns the screen back on. The quickest way I've found to resolve the issue is to put it back into Standby (Fn-Esc) and then power the machine back on. Then I just have to make sure the computer isn't left alone for more than a few minutes... if the screen powers off, I'm back to square one. Does anyone have a resolution for this? Updating my drivers on the ATI website isn't an option, ATI's utility won't allow me to install the drivers for my Mobility Radeon X1300, they require me to go through Dell. I'm using an Inspiron E1505, less than 8 months old, running Windows XP Media Center. Thanks!
