Dell Studio 1537 laptop display went black

Last night my Dell Studio 1537 laptop display went black.  I thought it shut down because the battery (I knew it was running low).  I was carrying it into another room to plug it in when it happened.  Once I plugged it in to the ac I went to restart it, but realized it was already on – just the screen was still black.  So I manually restarted it – but still, nothing.  It turned on and I could hear the sounds, but nothing on the display.  Then I thought maybe I had accidentally hit a display on/off button or something to brighten/dim it, so checked externally, but there isn’t anything for that.  I removed the battery and plugged it in to just the ac – same thing no light, so I replaced the battery and just turned it off for the night.

This morning I tried it again, this time I did see something.  I could see the dell logo come up during the startup, but the screen was still as dark as being off.  It must have just been the lighting in the room that allowed me to see the logo.  I really hope I don’t have to send this back in for repairs, I have only had it a month.

Has anyone had a similar problem and resolved it?  Or if you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate any/all help!!

Hey Big Mama-

Did you find the link to Apator's step-by-step instructions, or did you just start disassembing things until you found the short brown cable?  If the former, can you post?

Thanks!

I am eager to try Apator4225's approach but it appears the hyperlink to his/her step by step solution has been removed.  Can Apator or the person who replied that this solution worked repost the link?

Thanks

Yo dogbone1,

I followed the service manual  here.

Like I said before, it was a relatively easy take-apart and fix. You need some patience, a good memory and a set of tech-geek tools.

As an addendum, I have to say that the whole problem arises from a design flaw with that one cable. It is too short and continuous opening and closing of the machine tugs it just enough to cause the problem. Since I first fixed my friend's machine, the cable has come loose again and required me to repeat the fix.  Just leave the Studio 1537 on a desk and try to avoid closing it too often and it'll be all good.

Good luck!

I had similar problem with screen on the studio 1537 flickering/turning dark.  Seemed if i pressed certain areas around the laptop the problem would go away for a few minutes/seconds.

Turned out to be a loose wiring connection.  Didn't have to take apart the whole screen.  Didn't have to take apart the screen at all.  Follow the instructions for taking off the "Center Control Cover" here:<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> ,  The wiring that is loose is near the upper right corner. Gently press down to secure.  Somebody suggested securing it with tape although I didnt do that.   You will need  1 or 2 good small end screw drivers.

There is a youtube video someone has produced -- very helpful but he took apart way too much to fix the loose connection.   Search youtube for "Dell Studio No Video Fix (loose connection)".  Here is the link.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2CJvzD_yvg

Ok I realise this is an old post.

But where is this mysterious brown wire located?

Cannot find one coming from the screen display to anywhere.

Is there 2 types of screen on these?

Mine has the inverter at the bottom of the screen which I thought was faulty.

thanks
