Dell XPS M1530's battery won't charge, plugged in.

My Dell XPS M1530's battery won't charge, and the laptop doesn't recognise the adapter.

At desktop, it says "0% available (plugged in, not charging). When I boot it up and enter setup (F2 at the DELL spash screen), it doesn't recognise my adapter (D series, the very same one supplied with the laptop, and which it has recognised for more than a year up until now), and mentions that my "battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced".

I get no error message while booting normally either, simply the "0%" icon in the task tray in Vista. The battery status LED on the front of the laptop is flashing red, as if to say the battery is simply undercharged.. but the battery just won't charge! I've left my laptop off and plugged in for 2 days, and it hasn't charged the battery.

It turns on just fine with the AC adapter plugged in and battery removed, the same with the battery installed. I've checked all the contacts on the battery and adapter, they are clean and not broken. I don't have any other adapters or laptops to test with.. when I run the self help diagnostic tool (in the Dell Support Center), it just turns my laptop of as there is zero power. I'm unsure as to whether I need a new AC adapter or battery.. I'm really hoping it's not the motherboard.

Hello MrBill,

Try this url : http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R193896&SystemID=XPS_M1530&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=14338&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=5&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=267480

If it still doesn't work out for you, I can upload my downloaded file and put up a direct link for you if you want.

OK So I am trying to get the 09 bios version but every time I do it just says there is no file to download. I am trying on Dell's site and when I click download and then double click on the file that was downloaded it says there is no file. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I put the A09 biosfile online at  https://www.yousendit.com/download/K0JRdFdUQ0NsamZ2Wmc9PQ  for you, hopefully it'll work : -).

It does the same thing. I get the Dell Driver Download manager and it says "There are no files to download. Please go to Drivers and Downloads to select file."

After your download, leave the file on your desktop, close and reopen in safe mode.  It is possible that your securiy program is removing it when you try an install..  See if the files now run.  Also look at your startup settings to see if update bios is allowed.

It worked fine and flashed the 09 bios but it didn't help the charging problem.

Below is my post to a similar problem.  Perhaps it will help.

Gone are the days of simple laptops.  Dell laptops require Dell battery chargers and are designed to recognize them.  If the power adapter port on you laptop is damaged (by inadvertently pulling or jerking, etc), it may fail to identify the battery charger and refuse to charge the battery.  This happened to me.  Fortunatly, my 1737 has a daughter card which holds the charging port and related electronics.  I only had to replace it rather than replacing the whole mother board.  $15 vs $300.  Hope yours is made the same way!

And WHEN will computer makers design an external power supply port that is ROBUST!???  or do the just love the repair income...

I bought a the battery via Lance's link to Amazon for $35.  It came with enough charge to change the BIOS to version 9.  Am now able to charge my new battery as well as the old one.  Changing the BIOS was the key.  Unfortunately, I didn't realize it until my old battery was too depleted to flash the BIOS.

I'm very disappointed in Dell, as I called them about this months ago and they wanted $450 to change the motherboard.  Outrageous!

I had the same problem with mys dell xps 1730 its defently the data cable between the adapter and cpu mine was broken right by the jack that plugs into the back of the laptop , seems the silicon they used in the plastic jacket had hardened and cracked after a few bends , causeing the fragile data cable to brake , some quick solder and all back to 100% power supply is recognised again and battery charged ...I posted a youtube vid maybe it helps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5s9guCcRmw

The power cable on my bent, just at the blue light, but it continued to function.  I just applied a healthy dob of 2 part glue and it has been servicable since.  I isolated my original problem to the power plug in the computer.  Fortunately, the 1737 has a daughter board that holds the power plug and 2 UPS plugs.  I was able to find one on Ebay and replaced it, solving the problem.

I still want to rant a bit about laptop external power adapters.  It seems to me that I could easily design one that, when subject to unacceptable force, just disconnected rather than transmitting that force to the power jack in the laptop.  I've had 5 laptops over time and every one of them has given me problems in this area.  Personally, I think that computer manufactures simply want that breakage as a source of repair revenue.

It's kind of like the USB adapter for wireless mice.  I've had a number of them break doing damage to the dongle itself and/or the USB port in the laptop.  Another source of 'additional' revenue?  I think so.  I see that, finally, some manufacturers are coming out with a dongle that is more like a Bluetooth plug,  which is small and fits close to the computer body.  FINALLY. .;....

Clearly, there is a great business opportunity here since Dell's engineers are not coming through with their own better designs.  How about making and selling roust third party plugs and adapters.  Call them "Gorilla plugs" that don't break with normal use.

Clearly there are multiple causes for this type of error.  I did flash my bios to the latest version, but it didn't help.  I also bought  another battery for the machine, but that was in the cards anyway.  They don't last forever.   I also bought a new power supply.  That proved fruitless too.

Yes, there is.  Unfortunately, it would be a pain to accomplish.  The companies for which it would be easy are those that make replacement power supplies.  They have the specs on all the different shapes and sizes of adapters.  But they might think that producing a $5 dollar part would cost them bigger sales... and the'd be right.

Mine gives me an "AC Adapter not recognized" message before the BIOS boot sequence begins. In Setup (tap F2 after turning on) it says "battery not recognized." This is an intermittent problem on my machine, sometimes it works fine and charges, sometimes I get the error and it doesn't charge.

This is the final month of my warranty period. Here's what I have had done so far:

- Dell replaced the motherboard (the entire machine just stopped working one day, but it had the same battery charging problem before it died)

- I replaced the Dell 85 Watt battery with new version of same

- Dell replaced the AC adapter

- Dell replaced the hard drive (the warranty people switched it out when they replaced the motherboard, said there was a problem with it...)

That list doesn't include my first round of warranty work when one of the USB ports stopped working.

I am now waiting for another "return to depot" box from Dell to mail my laptop out again in hopes of fixing this problem before the warranty ends and "intermittent" becomes "permanent."
