It may still be possible to retrieve data. To try, mount the drive in a 2.5" USB shell and attach it to a working system -- see what you can read.

Hi FigVM,
2000-0142 indicates hard drive failure on the computer. We need to replace the hard drive.
Try to recover data from the hard drive.
I have provided a link below for drive savers data backup:
http://dell.to/12Nx4uq
Click on the above link and select the options accordingly. They would help you in backing up data.
You can also contact any local technician to back up data.
If the computer has active warranty I shall go ahead and arrange for a service to replace the part.
Check warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
Kindly private message me the service tag of the computer. To private message the service tag click my User name and click Start conversation.
Awaiting your response!

Hi Darkuser,
The error code 2000-0142 indicates hard drive failure; you may reseat the HDD and then run the test to check if the error re-occurs. Consider backing up data and be ready to change the HDD just when it fails.

hi, I had the same error code (0142) but I didn't get the chance to back up my hard drive. does that mean I am going to lose everything on there?
After the test finished (and the error came up), it started beeping and I tried going on the dell website to see what was happening, but whenever I clicked on the link "Dell Product Manual" (here: http://www.dell.com/support/article/au/en/audhs1/615956), it took me to an entirely differnent page, not the manual, so I couldn't go any further than that
Any help will be incredible
thanks

Not necessarily. Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external USB case and attach it to a working system - you may be able to recover some or all of your data.

My dell had that error and I installed a new disk and reloaded. I put the bad disk in a USB adapter. Windows Vista, 7, and 8 couldn't read the disk. I downloaded a copy of ubuntu for my desktop, loaded the ISO file to a DVD and rebooted. Ubuntu lets you try their software without loading it on the hard drive. After Ubuntu loaded I plugged I the USB disk adapter and was able to see the drive and load my picture, favorites, downloads to my hard drive. 99 percent of the time that my friends couldn't retrieve their data from a bad disk I was able to retrieve it using any form of Linux. Their are many flavors of Linux available at the distrowatch website.
