Does the XPS 17 3D support Nvidia Optimus or not?

I recently ordered an XPS 17 3D and when I originally ordered, Dell's web site advertised "with Optimus" on the graphics card page while ordering. Today, the "with Optimus" text has been removed from the graphics card ordering page for the XPS 17 3D. "With Optimus" is there for the non-3D XPS 17, but I want the 1080p display and with Optimus.

I don't care about the 3D, but without Optimus supported, that is a deal breaker for me so I need to know the truth now so that I can cancel my order. I'll gladly order later whenever Dell decides to offer what I need, which would be a 17.3" 1080p (no 3D) display with Optimus supported and built around the second-generation Intel Core processors.

I first learned of this on third-party forums so I must seek confirmation here.

Never mind. I was able to cancel my order without hassle. The Dell rep was nice and helpful.

To anyone reading this and is interested in the 3D display on the new XPS 17, do know that the NVIDIA Optimus technology is not supported on the Dell XPS 17 3D display. To me, Optimus is a big deal and I think it is safe to say that other customers agree.

Perhaps Optimus may be supported on the XPS 17 3D display in the future, but a Dell phone representative could not confirm this for me at this time.

I am in the same situation. I ordered my system a few days ago and just today learned about the lack of Optimus. My receipt clearly shows NVIDIA...with Optimus. I too noticed that this text was removed from the web site.

As in the post above I also believe the optimus to be an important component. My main use of the system will be for low power requirements (word processing and web surfing) but when the time comes for high quality graphics, I imagined the optimus would be the gate keeper and automatically switch into high gear when needed.

My call to Dell today went quite differently. It took a few transfers before anyone could 'officially comment" on this. The technical support person I finally ended up speaking to put me on hold as he initially didn't know anything about my question. He eventually came back and refused to specifically say that Optimus would not work but offered a solution.  He indicated that I would easily be able to turn on and off the Nvidia graphics (a right click and into settings) and use the built in graphics on the i7.

This seems like a reasonable solution but I will have to wait and see when the system arrives.

I too was tempted to cancel the order but his re-assurances have left me in doubt as to what the right course of action is. I am not a 'techie' and whatever solution will have to be simple.

In closing I will add my voice to the chorus that this would all be so much easier if we could get a 1080 screen without 3D. I have no interest in 3D but feel an uncompromising need for the best quality display.

I would appreciate any comments on the proposed solution.

and while I have your attention  - my interest in 1080 is focused more on photography than gaming. Am I misguided as the importance of the 1080?

Thanks

KM
